Sky tv

My sky SD box went tits up this morning and is now dead, fair to say it has lasted some years but have been thinking of cancelling for some time now so this seems a good time to do it, fed up paying for adverts and endless repeats specially on discovery channels,what do others think of Sky?

I told them I wanted to leave and they reduced my monthly payments by £10 for 6 months.

Not a fan of Sky. but I watch a lot of the Discovery type programmes like Last of the Alaskans etc also Mountain men. Freeview is unreliable around this area even though I am less than 5 K from the masts at Bluebell hill in Medway. I am not allowed festoon type ariels on the roof.

Another post gone missing, said our freeview is rubbish here just 19 channels but we have all terrestial catch up and amazon prime + you tube so happy with that

But can't you use your existing Sky dish with a Freesat box?

I have Sky myself for broadband, TV and the telephone and I'm reasonably happy with them.

Mick, Phone Sky and tell them you are cancelling your contract and going to one of the competition, they will most probably give you a new box just to keep your custom. Worked for my son in law.

Was with Sky at the last house but with Virgin for the last 3 years as they offered a better internet speed at this address. I have found both of them to be OK but don't get sucked into sales talk and take out services on 'offer' for things you will never use. A bargain is only a bargain in you actually need it.!

All very similar as I said except for a different menu system to find what you want. - However it's a buyers market and lots of deals to invite / keep your custom.

My Freeview didn't work too well in summer, found out it was because of a stand of trees on a rise between me and the transmitter, TV signal doesn't pass through leaves it seems,especially when wet. Changed to FreeSat, no complaints at all,and more channels of rubbish than you can imagine as well as the good stuff, usually on BBC or Channel 4

As a child I lived in Germany for 3 years so only tv in German available, read lots of books, about 5 a week, as an adult I have worked shift work most of my life so never got hooked by tv. Mainly put TV on to watch news, must be one of the few to not watch bake off final as its quiz night down the pub. Never had Sky as I think most of it will turn up on terrestrial tv eventually. F1 lost a fan through their greed, not worth getting sky for a race every couple of weeks. Given a choice of tv or internet I would bin the tv.

Freesat is an option although there is a cost to get the box, basically I have enough of sky and just want it gone, could get a 2nd hand box with no subscription but seems that sky block free to air channels that should be on freeview but as I said freeview isn't very good here, I do like the yesterday channel not on freeview and not on sky with no subscription but can get it on my tablet, anyway have just took sky box out and emailed sky and now wait for a phone call no doubt

I tried to cancel my Sky contract by phone and email which they made very difficult to do so I just stopped the direct debit and they spent the next 18 months chasing me for £67. Some of the debt collection agencies got a bit near illegal so I started invoicing them for the time and trouble which soon made them back off, all been quiet now for about 6 months. There was a consumer TV program about the way Sky operate when trying to cancel a contract so they are well known in this area. I am happy with BT now. Regards Pat

I recently cancelled my Sky contract and used a tip from someone that worked really well for me.

When they ask why you are cancelling, tell them you are emigrating. There is no further attempt to try and bribe you to stay on and they cancel it straight away. Only took a few minutes on the phone.

I paid £189 for a Humax freesat box at Currys / PC World, and it pugged straight onto the same connections and dish that the Sky box was on and works a treat. There are loads of channels to choose from and unless you specifically want Sky channels I would ditch them. My basic Sky HD+ subscription was almost £43 per month, so my freesat box will soon pay for itself.

Cable is great for the broadband speed. I get 60 Mbps on the cable modem but only 4 on the ADSL. Actually different situations so slightly biased comparison and I only need a small amount to work from home.

The OP didn't mention what kind of box he was using. Having a TiVo with multichannel recording has totally changed my viewing so apart from news I don't watch live TV and never worry that I'm gong to miss something or have to rush home for a program.
I get the impression that a lot of people are now addicted to catch up, Netflix and internet music services more than regular TV but soaps and things like Bake-off still have big audiences.

We had Sky originally because the TV reception where we live was dreadful. We were paying Sky about £90 per month and decided it had to go, especially as we are not sports or soap fans.

We went with TalkTalk because there broadband speed is good in this area, they were less than half the cost of Sky and the only additional cast was to have a new box. You also need an aerial for Freeview and we already had Freesat built in to the TV.

Customer services have been good on the two occasions we needed to talk to someone and the fitters from BT & TaalkTalk were excellent.

We are still discovering channels and are very pleased with changing.

I have a FreeSat box in the lounge and a FreeView box in the bedroom. One would think that sending a signal up to a geostationary satellite which then rebroadcasts it back to earth would cause a delay between the signals received by Freesat and Freeview. There is, but the Freeview signal is about 2 seconds BEHIND the Freesat signal?????????

Far more interesting things in life. Take Wednesday for instance. Decided to knock off early from work so jumped in the truck at 3:30, Fiat as well [ Oh dear oh dear ] drove up to see the Delectable Debs, only 120 miles, got there at 6.00 as traffic was a bit heavy on the M6.

Had a coffee, hug and cuddle but not in that order and left again at 7:30.

Because traffic had calmed down a bit managed to do the return 120 miles in just a tad under two hours.

Now that was a late afternoon and evening well spent. Who wants to be watching a box ?

How long is a tad? How much does it shorten two hours by?

Door to door journey time was exactly 2 hours 1 minute but had to stop off at Debs end to throw some diesel in, so a tad in this case was about 8 ? minutes

Sky for me is a stupidly expensive but necessary evil. I'm stuck with it because I love rugby and cricket, and Sky is the only (legal) way to see the good stuff.
