Thread: My first lathe
04/10/2017 04:31:54
Posted by Bazyle on 03/10/2017 13:19:22:

The 4in longer bed and slightly more powerful motor may be worth the extra £100 even though most work will be under 2 inches long it makes things a little easier to set up.

As said on another thread BEGINNERS DON'T NEED A QCTP, there are more important things to buy.

If you have the money for a WM180 and a QCTP then you have the money for a WM240 which is worth far more than having the QCTP and it has a vertical slide and eventually a QCTP available.

If you have the money now for a WM240 and a QCTP then get the WM250 and so on. Always sink the max into the lathe to start with as it is easy to get extras later but a real hassle to change up the lathe.

.

This is logical and good advice.

Although a QCTP is certainly a very handy item to have. Reality is a considerable amount needs to be budgeted for tooling for a lathe. This is often forgotten. - But then again Christmas is coming. wink

I don't know this, but I would strongly imagine that there will be youtube videos about how to apply it best.

This is a good product for your needs. Not cheap but one of the best.

Once you have given the metal a final clean don't hang about before giving it the first coat of etch primer. Aluminium oxidises very quickly. Even though you cannot see it.

If you need a 30mm throughway in the mandrel, (have I misread previous posts?)will a Myford, even a late 4MT one be capable?

Howard

Nope! The 4MT Myford spindles (S7 big bore, and 254) are only bored 26mm smiley

.

A Boxford X10 series lathe has a 35mm spindle bore.

But people are asking (don't know if they are getting) silly money for them recently. I have one and it's for it's size a nice lathe. But they are not IMHO worth what I am seeing them now advertised for.! frown

I've seen the offerings of RDG tools for small oilers which would fit my lathe and cost less than £2 each.

.

I have looked on RDG site for the oilers and cannot see any at that kind of price. - Can you post a link.

Also what to do if 'contaminated' with softer metals or body filler.

.

Dip in acetone or cellulose thinners and rub with a small wire brush.

.

But I also would like an overview on using files. I obviously use them like most here do but I often make a total hash of the process. blush - Hence me knowing how to clean body filler off them. indecision

Same as Jason. Files, Dremel and a smear of Isopon P40 after wiping with acetone for any low points or places where I have got over enthusiastic with the first two.

A quick dusting flick over with spray primer will easily reveal any areas you may have missed that need further attention.

All mine have a male connector on them like the image.

Looks to be made of an alloy. - Is there not a member that is handy with a Tig welder in your area.? Does not need to be pretty as it will never be seen. Just functional.! Install a new bearing for good measure while it's in pieces.

Talking of 'pets' This hairy legged handsome-hero has recently been adopted and living in the garden. Estimate it to be between 30-35mm. No idea what breed it is but his/her days are numbered with the colder weather coming I should think.

Not really relevant to OP but some may like a nosey.

Thread: Cam material
27/09/2017 14:08:34

.

I have always found silver steel to be reasonably nice stuff to machine with nice sharp cutters. Having used it a fair bit (including making a cam) it's certainly IMHO nothing to shy away from.

Having said that depending on the supplier some seems to be nicer than others. - Stuff from HPC gears is always nice.

Thread: Any caravaners on here
26/09/2017 08:12:38
Posted by duncan webster on 25/09/2017 23:09:59:

I used to work in deepest North Wales, the antics of some shed draggers who would hold up lines of traffic miles long when I was trying to get home make me wish that all their towballs would creak and drop off!

.

I used to spend quite a bit of time in North Wales (Abersoch) The general feeling of many of the locals was that caravans should only be allowed to use A and B roads between 8pm and 6am

There used to be a lot of accidents with somehow-someway involving a caravan. Not sure if this was the result of the towing driver not being overly competent with the task or others getting frustrated and taking chances to overtake. Probably a combination of both I would think.?

Do caravans contain self destruct detonation charges.? - As they seem to explode into tiny fragments when involved in the smallest of bumps.

The ones I have purchased from Eccentric engineering are of excellent quality but have a flat top to them without the groove Graham is requesting.

Nick

Edit :- The ones from Chronos https://www.chronos.ltd.uk/acatalog/New--Clamp-Type-Parting-Tool-s-with-Chipbreaker-Blade--5--cobalt-.html look from some of the images as if the may have a groove in them. - You could always phone them and ask.
