Yahoo have done an abomination

Yahoo have done a Faceook lookalike makeover of their Groups and in the process have alienated just about everyone in sight.

Group owners are now planning to move to Google or another platform.

I belong to many Groups, and they are now totally inaccessible.

Whoever designed and signed off on this 'upgrade' need to be fired.

Their new CEO has lost the plot in a big way.

Geoff - Shaking my head at how a company could be so stupid.

Hi Geoff.

You are not alone, see **LINK** for more info.

It may be relevant here as I have been an active member of the mini-lathe and mill groups for many years as I find that they complement this group quite nicely.

One of the nastier aspects is that my account was selected for the NEO trial without asking me if I wanted to become a crash test dummy.

There is talk of applying pressure to Yahoo by boycotting/ complaining to their advertisers.

Thank goodness I don't hold any shares in their stock.

Regards from the land of the kangaroo

Danny M,

I've been following that thread from the moment I was NEOd and have posted my thought under GeoffH.

That new CEO of theirs needs to be shown the door.

It is going to be very interesting to see what effect all the negative response will have on their share price and how advertisers respond.

The outcry is gathering such a momentum that Yahoo better respond very soon, or they will do irreparable damage to their image, if they haven't already done so.

Actually the way they are treating their loyal customers, their demise may not be such a bad thing, and in the process it will set an example to others of what happens when moronic management decisions are taken, and the consequence/s that follow.

I've used Yahoo since the early '90s, but gave up on their email due to its total lack of security, having had ALL of my accounts hacked/hijacked, but remained with the Groups for the inestimable value they offer/ed in collective information and experience.

What on earth goes through the minds of management when they treat what must be one of the best and most valuable assets that any Internet company has, with such disdain?

It's now up to the shareholders, advertisers and media to decide their fate, as they, Yahho, are ignoring us, their loyal users, completely.

Geoff - Found my voice again.

Is it Yahoo global? The Triumph Daytona group I use still looks the same.

Apparently that page has changed but you only see it if you log in (or something.)

Yep, Yahoo global as far as I can tell.

They are still 'testing' the new NEO, so not every Group has been made worthless - Yet.

The total lack of response from Yahoo doesn't bode well for the future of the Groups, with many already heading off to Google and other platforms.

All of my Groups have been made virtually worthless for me, as I cannot access them.

Geoff - Mind still boggled at their stupidity

G'day again.

I actually got a response from a customer service person apologising for the 'problems'.

They must have checked my account as they said that I had been a valued customer for 7 years etc...

I told the poor lady that it was not her fault that her new boss was stupid and advised her that it might be a good idea to start looking for a new job as the mainstream media are picking up on the saga.

Many of the affected users are now complaining to Yahoo advertisers. The ones that have bothered to reply to me so far have promised to investigate the matter further.

Ain't social media wonderful?

Hi Geoff,

I visited Yahoo groups earlier today, was able to access the few groups I wanted to check. But it was not easy to find those groups, the new interface has them in another order than before. You can reorder them if you like. Can't say I am very happy about the new user interface, may be it will be better when they have sorted out all the "teething problems".

ive just had a quick look and to be honest i cant see what all the fuss is about.
all my groups are available and i found everythign i wanted to . I can see where some people might get confused by the new look/interface though. Especially if you have a large number of groups to check.
i do think the limit of 10 in your adjustable list of groups though is a bit low.

but as for the overall general look of it, i dont think its that bad
but then i do have adblocker running all the time on ALL websites so i dont get all the crap others may be getting

Well, for once my luditism has escaped me.

I guess I'm in the minority but I quite like the new interface.

Initial reaction was 'what the f"£$ however, after playing around with the new interface and getting used to the way it works, I find it quite intuitive.

Yahoo groups was stuck in the dark ages of traditional BBS format and the new layout is a refreshing update.

Like anything, we always react to change but give it time and get used to the way it works. It may grow on you laugh

None of my Groups has the new interface. My luddism is that I don't like browser based groups...USENET forever (but I think it died a while back)

I am concerned that on one of the groups I follow the founder has commented that the moderators' job has been made impossible and he might close it. I'm not sure if the data then evaporates or the group just goes dormant with no new posts. These groups have so much in their archive that could be useful to me one day.

The old functionality was poor and the new much the same just a different colour. I don't think they put much admin effort into the old format or cared about the user experience. If you are giving the product away free and enough people like that free aspect to play along and keep the advertisers happy why would you bother with the quality of the product. It is hard enough to get managers to care about their product when its hard cash sales influence their bonus.

I just had a look at the Yahoo Drummondlathe group and I think the new look is a small improvement over the gawdawful old system. Seems easier to find stuff and view conversations. But it is mostly wax on a dirt floor. Same old primitive email based 1980s system underneath the new veneer, can't post pics or links to URLs in your posts etc etc.

Looks like they realised they needed to update the old mess but did not want to spend money on it. Shame really. The Myford and Drummond groups on their are the net's best resources on the older machines.

I can access the groups I am a member of, but when I tried to reorder these groups some would end up where I wanted them, others seems "unmovable". The reordering I did yesterday was Ok though. So there is clearly still problems with the new software Yahoo uses.

I vaguely recall Yahoo did a major change quite a few years ago. That change had everyone up in arms and calling for a lynching.

The new format is ok, you will get used to it and soon forget the OLD ways. Unuseable and worthless, I don't think so.

Time to move on guys and deal with the new 'free' situation. Embrace the NEW format because it aint going away.

Steve,

Read all the complaints from the Group owners and moderators.

IF it was useable I wouldn't complain.

I'm not against change, but I am when it is a backward step, as NEO is.

NEO may not be going away, but I will be, together with many more.

Geoff - I welcome change provided it's of benefit.

The Shaper group seems the same as when I went on holiday 3 weeks ago and last accessed it

About half my groups have been neo'd.

However on my computer the neo 'more' button doesn't work so 'files' menu option doesn't appear. In case this happens to you it is possible to edit the current page URL to end ..groupname/files and it will work.
