I like the motoring section.

Makes a change from all that CAD/CAM/CNC stuff.

Can't put my finger on it but to say this was a 200th edition special it somehow seemed lacking in content ?

Or is it just me ?

Certainly nothing special if it is supposed to be a celebratory edition.

Not much in there that cant be found online. It was nice to see complete articles from start to finish though.

Many articles seem to be drawn out of late that could have been completed in one issue. Throw a few more pages in and complete articles in an issue please

Gentlemen,

I'm going to buck the trend and say that I think its a very good colection of articles, I quite like the motoring piece firstly because I own a classic car and secondly because as a Newsletter writer of a club I belong to I find that putting an outsider into the pages of the general club subjects lightens it up and gives the reader something else to think about.

The various engineering subjects are interesting as well particularly as I've never seen them, the ball turning piece iis of particular interest to me, as the saying goes you can please some of the people some of the time and not most of the time

I agree the ball turning article was particularly interesting, but it was also the most frustrating, in that there was insufficient explanation or constructional detail. The function of some of the parts was quite difficult to fathom, at least I found them so.

Isnt that part of the challenge, to make it I will have to adapt it to suit my lathe so a lot of the detail will be off no use to me but the basic premise is good enough for me to copy.

I found it a good issue, especially nice to have a complete Harold Hall article in it. George Thomas can claim 'prior art' on that, but it is different in all the details.

The one I found hardest to follow was the 'folding machine'. Is it a folder or rolls? I must spend more time on it.

One of thsese days I will make a VERY SIMPLE ball turning attachment - they seem to attract complication like a magnet. You just need a pillar that can be attached to the cross-slide with a rotating tool holder witha long handle and a way to adjust the toolbit in small increments (e.g. a 40 tpi 1mm pitch screw pressing against it).

I haven't read the car article yet but it fits the ethos of MEW.

Surely the car item is in the wrong magazine. There are any number of publications on the newsagents shelves covering such subjects. I only see 6 precious pages of my model engineering magazine lost to something which is better covered elsewhere.

To be honest - I received my copy yesterday and I thought it was just a little mundane for a 200th (and presumably therefore special) Edition.

I also really wish that they would not place advertisments (7 pages of them) inside the main body of the magazine section. I like to book-bind my copies and don't really want to include this material too.

So no cigars from me I'm afraid.

I was most surprised by the fact that Harold Hall did not even bother to tip his hat in the direction of old GHT. Many of the ideas of the small rotary table would look to be a direct lift from George's design, and may I say that I find GHT more easy to follow in his instructions.

I am sorry Alan that you find it surprising I did not give GTH a mention but I am not well read, do not have the time, and did not know of his table.

I cannot say that my offering is totally from my own head but prompted by a photograph I had seen during my time as editor, I now find is was acctually in issue 1 of MEW. And the person who made that was a Tony Daish and I did not give him a mention either.

It is probable that GHT had also been influenced by others offerings.

I have now found the GHT table in the Hemmingway catalogue and can see some long distance similarities. Though I do not see fine adjustments of the stops, 24 hole indexing and, for me, the inbuilt facility to be able to centre workpieces very easy.

It is quite probable that over the years I have produced items that had a noticeable similarity with items designed by others, its inevitable. I can assure you that this is quite coincidental. For me, designing an item is much more satisfying than the making. If I just largely copied others designs most of the satisfaction would be lost.

GHT was influenced a lot by Jack Radford.

Radford was very innovative, GHT was more concerned with detail. It always amuses me that GHT found that he needed to travel to NZ to see Radford but Radford never saw the need to visit GHT.

If the magazine is short of good articles it would be nice to see some of J.A.Radford's articles reprinted.
