Several time today I have been unable to get onto the site (site server error) and when it does work it has logged me out. I rarely ever have to login but it has happened 3 time today. When I do get in it only responds very slowly, some times it 'times out' when I click to mkove to another page item.

I have the same result on a second PC and on an iPad (although they are all on the same broadband connection) hence my asking whether others have seen the same slow performance.

I know its bad form to reply to ones own post but maybe I need not have asked the question. After sending the first post I looked at another of the MHS websites (Model Flying).

Guess what, members on that forum have been complaining for days about poor performance!

There are some replies from their moderators who are aware of the problem. Wouldn't it be nice if the website administrators got their act together and placed a notice on the home page to advising users that the problem was being worked on. I just dreaming, it will never happen.

There has been comment in some of the Computer mags. about this and they say the since BT Infinity has started the bandwidth required has slowed the internet.

Also there is a lot of cable work going on with Fiber Optic and some of these circuits have been redirected while it is carried out.

How true this is I dont know but it makes sense in one way. It all started in mid January with my connection to TalkTalk. when my speed dropped below 1Mbs.

After some discussion on the Talk Talk Forum I replaced my BT input plate with a filtered plate with seperate connections for telephone and internet.

This no longer needs filters for each phone and the internet connection goes straight into the test socket.

My speed jumped to 3.4Mbs but I did have to buy an Ethernet cable to run from the Router to the PC.

I can supply details of these plates if there is any interest. They cost £14 each. The Ethernet cable about £10.

Gentlemen

Very bad with talktalk today but due to being in the wilds every time it rains down goes the speed and sometimes the connection disapears, copper wire and wet insulators a good conductor do not make, I remember when I had a crystal set, when it rained the signal got very weak, seems technology hasn't advanced as far as you think it has. stopped raining now so back to normal.

ps not only me but my neihbours have the same problem.

Clive, may I have a little more information on the input plates that you refer to. Nothing too technical. My broadband speed has dropped to just over 1 Mb/s. The cable is plugged into the "main" socket that is at the entry point into the house. The 'phone is on an ancillary socket. I usually use the wifi setup but fitted the ethernet cable to try and improve things but it made absolutely no difference. I am afraid that all BT can offer is b******t.

Mick, the plate is a BT NTE5 and is called a Master ADSL Adaptor.

The place to get the new socket is:- www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

Here you will find all the description and the instructions of how to do it, download the instructions (4 pages)

There is a need to disconnect the original BT plate and then put the cables back into the new one.

It is also desirable to disconnect the bell wire. It is all explained in the sheets.

If possible get an insertion tool for the cables.

One thing, is you will need longer screws for re-attaching the new plate, they will need to be about twice the length.

You will also need to put the router close by the socket and then run an Ethernet cable to the location of the PC.

This is not a big job but the cabling /Ethernet run may take you all over the house like mine did.

What I was enquiring about relates to this website only, I have quite a fast BB connection and my PC is hard wired to the router although my daughters laptop on the same router reports exactly the same upload and download speed as I get, when she uses it here (on WiFi).

Hi There

I have not noticed the main site slowing down but the admin side is slow.

However, I have the fastest broadband that a Sky technician has ever seen at about 22 or 23mb, just under the theoretical maximum.

regards David

Q for Clive -

Is your adaptor plate similar to the "I-Plate"? I ask, because I had to fit an IPlate to get my d/l speed above 700 ks! It did work - about a 30% increase noted but it was a much simpler fit than the mod you have described. Still bumbling along at 1 to 2 Mbs and would be happier to be able to bump it up a bit. The IPlate was recognised as being very much individual dependent - some got an improvement, some nothing. Do the same caveats apply to your device?

John - Bogstandard2 ... aaaarrrrgggghhhh !! 38Mbs!!! are you lodging with your ISP?laughlaugh

Hi there

Just tested my link its 72mbs and the web site is still slow. No other sites seem slow.

In fact it took me 14 seconds to log onto this site and about 1.5 seconds to log on to a site in the states.

Regards

Jonno

My system has been slow for last day or two, also "page not found" message regulary, and sites dropping out. I am on a sattelite system and is usually good, so would suggest not to do with the wiring as such, but I know next to nothing about this. BTW when I use spellcheck the whole lot dissapears, so not using it.

Just to confirm the the site is very slow, I waited over a minute to log in and over 30 seconds to move from topic to topic

I live in Melbourne Australia The speed is normally quite good maybe two or three seconds delay on average.

Cheers

John

Hello Cornish jack, The BT NTE5 plate is a straight through from the test socket on the original BT socket.

For testing an internet connection it is worth removing the lower part of the BT plate and plugging your ADSL connection straight into the test socket that is then exposed. With no phones or other equipment connected it is a 'Clean' connection.

Now the BT NTE5 plate seperated the ADSL line from the Phono line and has inbuilt filters which means you no longer need filters for any ancillary equipment.

I have no idea if the BT NTE5 plate is similar to the 'I' plate.

All I had was a standard BT box which I replaced.

Best to visit the Kitz site and read up what they say and I can vouch that it works. Again I would add that it helps if you have an insertion tool for placing the wires.

With reference to the bell wire, it is no longer needed with modern electronic phones and can be taken out of its receptacle and coiled back to stop parasitic signals.

Its not rain!

Whatever it is only affects this site, (and other MHS sites)

I have only looked at one other MHS site (see link) and they have had this problem for a few days. The 'Sick Forum' topic covers three pages but the really good thing is that the moderators do comment positively to the thread, know about the problem, and are trying to fix it.

We can only hope that this MEW forum may benefit from their efforts.

Be warned, its a slow site!

It was OK this morning but very slow again now (10th May 2012 16:40). Other unrelated sites seem to be working OK.

Ian.
