Thread: bizarre behaviour from spray can
24/09/2023 07:52:51

Thanks very much gents. Sounds about right. Now getting quite adept at spraying upside down.

Started to use a can of Acid 8 Etch primer which is about half full and probably getting on for a year old. It seemed to have run out of puff so suspecting a blockage I cleaned the nozzle with solvent. Now sprays for one or two seconds then out of puff again. Inverted can, as when clearing the nozzle after spraying and it had plenty of oomph with a good spray of paint. Tried it again with can upright and no oomph again. Inverted can and plenty of spray. This has been repeated until I got the job done, awkwardly, with the can upside down. I have never experienced this with spray cans in the past. Any ideas as to what is occurring? (No amount of shaking of the can made any difference.)

Thread: Help to identify Gauge 1 4-4-0 loco

You did some good work before you put it in its box all those years ago. That Shell Ensis did a good job as well.

Andrew, John and Nicholas. thanks for those nuggets of information. I have sent Andrew and Nicholas each a pm.

Good story that, Dave. I have no problems with boilers and I am very fond of the JVR type C which performs very well. As it happens the loco I am working on at the moment I have fitted with a JVR Type B which should be up and running shortly. But I digress. My sticking point is the valve gear which appears to be Joy's. What is the valve gear on the Kennions plans? I think the prototype D21 had Stephenson gear.

By golly, I do believe you fellows have nailed it ! The outline looks spot on. Thanks for your assistance. If I can get hold of some plans I can get it off the shelf it has been sitting on for the last few years and get stuck in!

Thanks Nick. You could well be right. I think the prototype 0f this one is pre-British Railways as the only 4-4-0 with 5ft8" wheels that I can find in the BR era is a GWR loco and this one is definitely not that. The work on this loco is pretty good in my opinion- better than mine- and I would be quite happy to have a go at "freelancing" it but the valve gear, Joy's I am sure, absolutely stumps me.

Thanks Bazyle. The following dimensions may help.

Frames -front buffer to drawbar - model 11 5/8" - x3/8 scale = 31ft x10mm scale = 29ft 7"

Driving wheels diameter over treads - model 2 9/64" - x3/8 scale = 5ft 8" x10mm scale = 5ft 3"

Driving wheels between centres - model 3 9/16" - x3/8 scale = 9ft 5" x10mm scale = 9ft 1"

Bogies diameter over treads - model 1 11/64" x3/8 scale = 3ft 1" x10mm scale = 3ft

Bogies between centres - model 2 13/32" x3/8 scale = 6ft 5" x 10mm scale = 6ft 1"

I have rounded up the extrapolated figures to the nearest 1/2".

img_4358.jpgimg_4357.jpgimg_4356.jpgImpressed by the response to Martin Langford's recent request to help identify a loco, may I also ask for similar assistance. It is a part built Gauge 1 4-4-0 tender loco which I bought a while ago. I am pretty sure it has Joy valve gear although I do not have all the components. I have searched far and wide but cannot find a trace of anything similar. If perchance it can be recognised a pointer as to where I might obtain plans would be appreciated.

Thread: Aligning threads

I wish to install a blower tube through the barrel of a boiler which is 2" in diameter and 6 1/2 " long. At the front end of the boiler I intend to s/solder a bush with a 1/4" x 40 thread. That is the easy bit. What thread can I cut in the corresponding bush in the backhead which will guarantee that both ends of the blower tube will engage with its corresponding thread without jamming up? Or am I pushing lady luck just a little bit too far?

Thread: Household paint. An observation!
18/06/2023 10:01:07

Sadolin Superdec Opaque was always my "go to" paint for exterior woodwork doing exactly what it said on the tin about coverage and 5 year life and no rubbing down required on repainting. So i had no hesitation in buying a tin to paint my side gates. What a disappointment. Difficulty in covering blemishes and overall coverage poor ....3/4 of litre tin to do 2 gates. As my neighbour remarked, I might as well have been painting with water! I did note however that the product now emanates not from Sadolin but from Crown. So looking for a replacement product for the future. Sikkens (Sico) comes to mind unless anyone can enlighten me further.

Thread: Dodgy files
29/04/2023 14:51:13

Thanks for all the advice gents. I have emailed Tome Feteira for their comments. The files actually cut rather well! So probably it is not worth making a Federal case out of as return postage will not be a lot less than a refund. The site that Bill has identified is the one that I bought from and I am heartened by his observations. I just hate being conned even if it is only by a few pence. Jason has mentioned ARC and I see that they do a good range of these files so it might be wise to stick to them in future.

There seems to be a lot of difference in the quality of the stamping on the specimen that I have and the ones that you show Jason? And there is no name as such only "Portugal".

28/04/2023 13:53:21

I was tempted by some files on EBAY purporting to be made by Tome Feteira. The seller's site showed photos of some genuine looking Tome Feteira boxes and wrapping but there were no close ups of the files themselves. The things that were delivered to me smack very much of cheapo Chinese tat. I have demanded a refund but the seller has refused and maintains that they are genuine Tome Feteira "new old stock" from the 1970's -80's. Before I take the matter further may I ask whether the forum can advise as to whether the article in the photograph is genuine or could have been in 1970. Thanks.

Thread: Chinese imports
12/04/2023 07:46:56

What is the current situation regarding Ebay purchases originating in China. I am after buying some end mills at around £15. There was a discussion on this site some time ago but I can't find it now. Online advice is not clear and the rules are somewhat haphazardly applied by all accounts.

As a starter, is the chassis and wheels set up "square" in all respects before you mount the boiler?

Sounds like a very useful poster David, but if like me you do not have room for it, "Drills, Taps and Dies" by Tubal Cain in the Workshop Practice Series is an excellent read with an abundance of data in the appendices.

Thread: Metric O Ring Grooves
09/01/2023 08:57:52

Baldric.... the polymax guide is exactly what I wanted. I have got a ME Handbook but it is an old version with very little info. on Metric O rings. Must get an update. Thanks everybody.

Mick

Would some kind soul point me in the right direction for a chart of Metric O ring groove widths and depths for various applications. There seem to be loads available for imperial rings but I am blowed if I can find one for the metric variety. The particular application I am looking for is for a 3.5 (id) x 1mm which for use in a loco axle pump. Thanks in advance.
