Myford will offer new lathes (built in UK) in 2012.
They also offer again regrind service for used lathes.

See their website..

It will be interesting to see what prices they charge for new lathes. I was looking for a Myford oil gun from them but I see they wanted over £71 for one. Looking at other items the prices seem rather high and I do wonder if they will price themselves out of the market and go the same way as Myford.

Douglas,

Prices for Big bore lathes have dropped from 300 + to about £160..
Oil gun is imported from switzerland, not cheap, but doesnt leaks.
Tapping chuck from Vertex is ok for price and a good item.

We'll have to look forward.

The Bed and Saddle Reconditioning Service wording at RDG appears to have been copied and pasted from the original Myford (Nottingham) website or similar original literature.

At the Midlands Model Engineering Exihition, one of the RDG chaps was saying that they were expecting their 'Phoenix' (my terminology) lathe to cost around £5000, but would come with more equipment as standard.

I'd say thats proberbly 3500 / 4000 pounds too much for a model engineers lathe, they must look to the competion, or they,ll not be in business for very long. Ian S C

Beat me to it John - but I'm willing to go to 300 if it closes the deal!

My oil gun - the genuine one from Myford a couple of years ago - leaks like mad. Suppose I should have returned it while I had the chance, but I didn't realise until some time later.

I have to say I have the exact same problem with mine David. I bought one off the Myford stand at the Bristol exhibition about 4 years ago. It cost a small fortune but I was assured it was completely leak proof. It leaked almost from the first filling as did at least 2 subsequent "warranty" replacements! I was hoping to get my money back at this years Bristol show but alas no Myford!

From Norton Motorbikes to Triumph Stags, it's a tradition for British engineering to leak copious quantities of oil.

You should be very proud to have such an original and traditional piece of British history.

If it has the Myford logo on it you can put it up on ebay in 10 years and they will fight like ferrets over it

FOR SALE. ORIGINAL MYFORD OIL CAN.

Then you can buy a non-leaky Suzuki oil can with the proceeds.

Well these posts have convinced me that a Myford oil gun may not be the answer so does anyone know of an oil gun that works well and does not leak like a sieve?

Hi Ady,

To quote Alain's message above:-

British Engineering? By the way, none of my Stags leaked oil, they often boiled due to poor castings (sand left in coolant ways - where have we heard that before), but no oil leaks worth mentioning.

Regards

Terry

Hi,
I converted an old telcalemit grease gun some eight years by making a brass adaptor
housing a very small O'ring to give a snug fit over the oil nipples on my ML7, no problems with oil leaks and cost effective.

Hi Bill,
I am very interested in converting a grease gun for use as an oil gun since they can be picked up quite cheaply. Is the conversion straightforward (any extra information would be welcome).

What leakage are you complaining of, Doug? Leakage of the oil gun body or leakage at the nipple when you apply it?

I bought the Lathespares gun for 30 quid and the gun itself has been fine. It will leak around the nipple if you are not spot-on with alignment but I think any gun will under those circumstances. I do what DC suggested here some time ago: use a small piece of paper towel as a "seal" between gun and nipple. Best tip I've picked up in these forums (and there have been a few). Works every time for me on my ML7

I use a telcalemit gun on my ML7 with no mods (might even be an oil gun!) and it works a treat, especialy the nipples that supply the saddle/bed ways. The only problem i have with it is it doesn't hold a great deal of oil!

What I found with my Myford oilgun was that the rubber sealing disc would bell up under pressure, pulling away from the edge seating and then leak!
Made a bigger dia. seal from some Vitax and all OK.

Reading about RDG/Myford making a new lathe, I wonder if it will be in the same shape and format or maybe modernised to facilitate machining?
I know they have all the patterns etc.
The Myford is an outdated design and a new modular lathe would be a great asset to the engineering fraternity.

Discuss.

Hi Doug,

Ive just come in from eating an Indian so I have only just picked up your post.
Conversion was fairly straight forward, I have only made the brass adaptor to fit on
the grease gun as I have not had any problems from the filling side. The adaptor
was profiled to access the reduction gear and pulley .( I can just hear my wife moaning
about the time//). Doug, I can send you details if required together with an image tomorrow . Must go.

Bill.

Hi Bill,
I did not know that cannibalism was still legal in Poole. More seriously the problem I have had with oil guns is leaking from the body of the gun which means it needs to be kept in an oilproof container and wiped clean before use. How did you seal the hole in the top of the grease gun where the grease is put in?
Doug.
