Space X was a pipe dream until he brought the industry out of the 70's production mindset! Now moon bases are genuine probability in even some of the more venerable of our lifetime! No argument he's a marmite character, but I'm 100% in the love it camp! J |

![]() 7881 forum posts 397 photos | Bit of a longwinded way of saying modular assembly. The Yanks were doing it with Liberty ships and then Victory ships in 1941. Pre-fabricated completed sections of the ship were made at remote workshops, trucked to the shipyard and welded in place in one go, instead of being made from the ground up on site as they went. They could build a ship in 42 days. Submarines were built the same way when I worked in the boatyard in the 1990s. Made in sections with all internals completed, then the sections were welded together like so many lengths of very large pipe. It's a good idea and somewhat innovative in the car industry. But there is the usual cloud of Musk hype around it. Grain of salt may be required. Interesting that even with all the automation and thus hardly any labor costs (comparatively) they are still proposing the new Tesla plant for Mexico where labour is cheaper than the USA. Will they never be happy until they get their cars made for free? |

And if they do (get them made for free) will they be giving them away?

US firms moving manufacture to Mexico has considerably boosted local supply chain and, correspondingly hollowed out the US one. Political issues with getting permission to build factories in the US too. Clive |

1817 forum posts 2 photos | My apologies if I caused offence with my use of "Bovine excreta" . I assumed that it was in total common usage. The use of the first and last letters plus filling in with asterisks, always seemed a bit pointless, as everyone knows the meaning of such a representation! However if I have offended then my apologies. As to the content of the OP's video. I just smile, Mr Musk is at least 80 years too late to claim this as a new way of production. Just typical of the man, hype is more important than fact. Regards, Andrew. |

Will they never be happy until they get their cars made for free? Tesla want to make BEV’s more affordable. The thinking is that the Mexico plant will be making the new sub $25,000 model. Rumour has it that it may have a single piece casting for the chassis to cut costs but reducing the wage bill will no doubt help as well.

Probably not quite as bad as last years Mercedes recall of 1 Million cars over brake problems. Or BMW’s 16,000 EV recall over possible total loss of power. |
