This morning I had to go to Warwick to another one of the companies Chemists to exchange our delivery vehicle for a replacement, I left Bedford at 9:00 and had a pleasant ride up the M1 and along the A45 arriving at 10:20,the switch was quick and I left at 10:40 for the return trip, as I approached the M1 the boards started flashing 40 mph and not long after we were stopped with the inside lane closed, we were then there for well over an hour whilst several police cars went by, three ambulances, two fire engines and two recovery trucks. I happened to look in my nearside door mirror and about 100 yds or so back from me there was a group of lads playing cricket, there's never a policeman when you need one.

Everything is done for a camera now.

Somebody would be filming it. Pathetic.

Society is broken.

Nothing new about this, it's the norm in India. One of the few places where there is grass is on the central reservation.

I think being a "foreigner" I'm misunderstanding this. As I read it there was a serious traffic jam for over an hour and some people decided to while away the time playing a small game of cricket. Is that so very bad? Were they actually affecting anyone else given that the traffic was all jammed up anyway? (I don't get the impression they caused the jam).

What am I missing?

In the spirit of the thread title, how about this:

Seen in our local supermarket: Bottles of "Organic Drinking Water". And no, there were no additives, the only enhancement was by the sales dept of the packager.

In the early 1990's during a very long traffic jam on the M6, I witnessed people taking their dogs for walks, a troupe of jugglers performing on the roof of a Transit van, and another of their number riding a unicycle in the fast lane. Probably never going to see that again!

Traffic is not moving anywhere, what's the problem with a quick game of cricket while waiting?

In some places they would have been shooting each other after the first 10 minutes. Cricket seems much more civilised.

Why do you assume that, then go on to deplore it?

What is wrong is that an emergency vehicle or some idot on a motorcycle may need that space or for vehicles to be moved in a hurry.
It's also against the rules.

Talking about idiots on motorcycles, me and the missus took a run down to the New Forest yesterday, going along a narrow twisty road towards Exbury gardens we were followed by an idiot on a motorcycle, he was all over the road trying to pass me so coming across a suitable passing space I pulled in to let him pass. As he flew past we could both see quite clearly that he had a dog sat on the petrol tank. He was gone before I could get his number.

Look up Motorbike Milly, well known in certain circles

Yes it is legal if done correctly, with a suitable carrier.
Devitt even have a page about it

Since he saw this in his "nearside door mirror" I'd assumed they were playing in the "closed" inside lane.

Far better to have a bunch of guys who can step aside than a selfish driver in their vehicle blocking the route.

People are going to say that you shouldn't stop a war to play football next!

Perhaps they've had a bad day, Mark -

- measured 9 inches twice to finish at 8-15/16", cut once then realised they'd read the rule upside down and the remaining stock is too short.

- Or lost the last 1/8" left-hand Holtzappfel-thread nut they had in stock.
