Thread: Gas fired engines

Converting model locomotives to run on propane is really not that difficult all i changed was remove the grate and ash pan and replaced them with the burners fitted in the old ash pan ,i did not change anything in the smokebox . The gas lines were made large enough so you do not get freezing of the pipes , this system is used in the USA they seem to be less regulated than us and they have massive burners in there settups.

I have fitted an arch in the firebox and also fitted turbulators in the tubes to slow the flow and get the maximum heat and find that you need the blower turned up to help draw the flame so you get a nice blue flame and a complete burn it is a bit of a learning curve ,but you do not have any ash plus you wont have to clean the tubes constantly ,i also run a separate carriage dedicated for the gas bottle only.

19/03/2023 04:37:44

In Australia or at least in NSW all of the fitting must be approved by the AGA and you must have a blowback valve also a thermocouple in the instalation.

Duncan I have built a three truck shay loco ,it is 1.5 inch scale but i made it to run on 5 inch gauge track, so the firebox is 8 inchs by 5 inchs rectangular with Marty burners

17/03/2023 21:12:02

Noel Shelley I used [Marty's burners] look it up ,the drawings are there for anyone interested and i have eight burners in the firebox ,they work a treat and are easy to make.

I have converted to propane in Australia , the governing body here is the AALS for model loco.s the have rules on propane firing , the completed setup has to be passed by a licenced LPG gasfitter however every state in Australia have different rules just to confuse everyone, i only run on one to two psi ,so the whole instalation is low pressure from the gas bottle.

Thread: Lake Macquarie Live Steam Rally
09/03/2023 20:49:27

This is my great friend's Shay ,he took just on seven years to complete it ,including designing and building the steam pump that works , i only took five years to build my Shay and Trevor also built a working steam pump for my shay we both belong to the same club and help one another out running our loco's, recently i converted mine to run on propane because of unreliable supply of good coal and yet Newcastle has one of the biggest coal loaders in the world.

Thread: Electric boiler feed pumps
03/09/2022 23:27:46

Here at our club in Australia they are popular with quite a few members, however at our last public day one failed due to a flat battery, i rely on an injector and axle pump ,but even then they can let you down. The electric pumps are good for 150 psi and are reliable ,just remember to have a good battery.
