Getting ready for the yearly Jan1 steamup... Nice and sunny and just below freezing - a nice day!

Public running day at the club yesterday, had a few visitors but not as many as a normal day so not too busy. House-hold chores this morning followed by a general tidy-up in the workshop. For JohnS, temperature at 5:30AM today was 27.4ºC (that's about 81ºF) , maximum at 1:30PM around 36º, humidity around 70%, so a bit too steamy for any serious work. The joys of living in the sub-tropics!!

Sorting out my workshop to make more space.I'm finding things I had forgotten I have.I have a workshop 25yds sq and still I am looking for more space.Today I am starting to make a spindle for a dividing head ,the one that I have made already, the MT 2 is 8th over size and will not tighten up my Myford collets.

When my 'new' Clarke CL430 arrived it was missing the tailstock gib strip. Fortunately it's identical to my Warco WMT300, so I copied that. Been wanting to do it all holiday, but yesterday afternoon & this morning I was able to get some time to myself & the workshop was above freezing, so I couldn't procrastinate any longer. So now the CL430 has taken a small step towards its eventual cnc'ing.

Getting shed ready for new to me Ton Senior M1. Thinking of puttin mill and lathe in middle of shed rather than round the sides.

Well as I have done this in the 'office' rather than the 'workshop' I'll report it here - I now have two complete tracks of 187 3D printed links each although one of them is in four parts. My left finger tips are coated in a mix of poly cement and superglue and my right finger tips are numb from pushing over 11 metres of 0.63mm wire into tiny holes. Now printing a pair of Mk IV sprockets to be followed by a mere eight pairs of suspension arms.

One or two minor issues so far, that I imagine are common to all 3D printers but no material problems. I really don't want to send this thing back to Dremel!

How are you supposed to complain about frozen feet and frozen feed water pipes if it's that warm??

BTW - a Sweet Pea ran on the track this year; ran just fine, as per the locomotives' usual performance.

Fun stuff, no matter what the temperature!

Aha ... it's the latest bit of the Jov[ia]labe

No problem running steamers in our summer climate, although often it's too dry so the fire risk limits use of live steam on track days. Problem with electric or petrol-driven locos in our summer is they often get too hot so either electronics give up or petrol vapourises before reaching the carby.

Better that than icing up the carby though, and at least there's a breeze while hurtling round the track.

Not workshop related as the workshop is at the other house and I'm stuck here doing end of year accounts [ unpaid ]

So decided to run the 3D printer.

Got a few conversion jobs coming up this year so decided to print a few type 24 motor covers off to tidy the ends up on the steppers.

Excuse the picture, this camera phone is about ready to give the ghost up I think.

Anyway it makes a nice tidy job.
