250 forum posts 1 photos | I can sympathize with you, Windows 10 is I think an attempt by Microsoft to catch up with Google's world dominating, or getting that way, android operating system. I have a 18 month old HP Envy which doesn't like Windows 10's constant upgrading of system files, my touch screen suddenly had reduced 'touches', my finger print security stopped working, and the light for telling me if my wireless connection was on or off suddenly gave up the ghost. Fixing it entailed stopping windows automatically updating system drivers, then deleting the Microsoft drivers and reinstalling HP's drivers which was a pain. Logging on can be a pain but you can get windows 10 to start up without having to input your password every time you start the computer. There is loads of help on the net. Our local hospital's monitors still display the Windows XP Professional logo which says it all.

250 forum posts 1 photos | John I have a Dell laptop that runs Linux, but it is still quite a way behind windows for ease of use. What has become a huge problem is the domination of the web by companies like Google. Here are a few of google's web addresses buttons.googlesyndication.com Some online host file list's over 350, you can use a host file block these in IE but you'll stop loads of webpages working properly, you'll also find that google has its fingers well and truly into Linux as their android operating system is Linux based, even the Raspberry Pi! ![]() 2314 forum posts 139 photos | Clive - I feel your pain! Some years ago I bought a new p.c - which came with Win 10 installed - for my wife to use. Eventually we did get it to work with some resemblance to our previous computers. She is now Ok with it to carry out her stuff. Having experienced the saga I did what my Kids have been telling me to do for years - and bought a Mac. Best move I've ever made. We are now an orchard of apples - we each have an iPad , I have an iMac and an iPod and all is going well. ( However there are a few probs with her Windows pic at the moment!) Norman

2147 forum posts 222 photos | I have a new Toshiba Satellite - purchased about four months ago now. It came with Win10 pre-installed and it has been fine - no real problems and it broadly works exactly the same as my previous (Win7) machine, so nothing much new to learn. I did go through the "privacy" options on receipt and turned off quite a lot of the "options" and I do not use Cortana either. Other than that, Win10 seems fine, with all my previous applications running on it, including Templot, TurboCAD, Tera Term and my 2007 MS Word, Excel, OneNote, Office - all behaving themselves. I'm sure Apple Mac products are very nice but a similar spec'd Mac system to the one I now have would have been nearly twice the price and Apple is very proprietary in nature. I've owned Tosh products before and was happy to do so again. So, I'm sorry I cannot help you with your immediate problem Clive but despite all that you can sometimes read here (and elsewhere) Win10 seems to be perfectly usable to me. I hope your problems get sorted soon. Regards,
IanT |

Clive Unless you use any Windows-only programs, Linux Mint is probably worth a look - you can download and install it a to a USB stick (or SD card or CD or anything else) and try it on your laptop without actually installing/changing anything in Windows. The MATE version is similar to Win 7 - you'd have no trouble with it whatsoever. It's free, open-source and each major version is supported for years then you just upgrade. You'll have no worries about viruses or malware either. Get it here: https://www.linuxmint.com/ It has great docs, masses of on-line help, forums and IRC if you need an instant fix. Pretty much all software is free and safe to install via the official 'repositories'. I run various versions of Linux on 14 pcs at work (all ex Win XP or Win 7 machines), on a desktop and a laptop at home, on a Rapsberry Pi and on my wife's netbook and my daughter's laptop. My son also runs it dual boot with Win 7 on a desktop and laptop and my brother runs it on 4 or 5 machines. My 85 year old father uses it on his laptop. I have a powerful gaming rig that runs Windows 10 and it's the only machine I ever get problems with these days. If I wasn't a 'gamer' I'd never use Windows again. Paul

![]() 2929 forum posts 41 photos | Mmm, this I do not understand, I now have a password which will open the PC. But, I still do not have any idea what my Microsoft acct. is! They asked me to give two recent emails that i sent, so I supplied them. Then they email me back to say it could,be 24 hours before they verify who I am. All this just to prove I am who I say I am from my email acct. Now i am dizzy! Meanwhile, Skype is stalled and now tells me I have tried too many times to make an acct. Once again asking for the Microsoft Acct. number. Talk about a snake eating it's own tail. Alright, I will wait 24 hrs. to see what will happen. Then report back. Clive |

When I need a new computer or upgrade I buy it from a small IT concern who put on exactly what I tell them, in my case W7 with all the service packs and no upgrades.

![]() 1494 forum posts 403 photos | Clive - Once you manage to assert control over your property you might like to download and install Classic Shell. Its free and turns your lovely new laptop into an XP look alike. It works a treat on my new Acer Aspire V17 Nitro laptop - gets rid of those horrid tiles and restores those old fashioned icons - just how I like it.
I appreciate your frustration with newly aquired IT kit – I have just spent several hours trying to get the SKY GO service running to no avail as it will not work with Chrome or Edge – the only two browsers I use.
Its at times like this that I think that for sanity sake a quiet seat in a corner with a copy of the BEANO and a nice cup of cocoa puts these tricksters in their place. Technology? Bah, phooey and everlasting buggeration.

![]() 1766 forum posts 46 photos | Hi Clive, Sorry to hear about your troubles. I bought a new laptop with Win. 10 earlier this year. I connected it to the Internet and turned it on. Like you say, you are asked for your Microsoft account ID and password, I had one and typed them and was logged on without any problems. A few months later I wanted to log on to my new computer in a place without an Internet connection, no way. I needed an Internet connection and had to create a new account on my laptop so I could log into it without having an Internet connection. Yes, I guess that is Microsofts idea of "User Friendly"? 978 forum posts 26 photos | With Win10 (and Win 8 before it), Microsoft try to take you down the path of setting things up with a Microsoft Account. Whilst it isn't at all clear, there is another option - just skip the page with Microsoft Account information and you can then set things up like in earlier windows versions. If I remember correctly, click 'I don't have an account', then when offered to create or register, choose 'Not now'. |

We use Linux exclusively in a commercial environment without any issues - creating artwork for advertising, writing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, inter-site comms etc etc. There's even a decent range of free CAD software The only problems arise if someone you want to exchange data with is using a custom-built or legacy application and quite often there's a way round that too, especially since more and more data is stored in common formats, MySQL, SQLite, XML etc, or pushed into 'the cloud'. We have zero issues with the Win/Mac world. EDIT: The only problem with specifying Win 7 with a custom choice of service packs is that before long it will be outdated and vulnerable... unless you never connect it or exchange data!
