Attn Neil.

In issue MEW 244 you've published Alan Wains article "A drill for a budget mini drill" .

Go back 16 months to MEW issue 228 and you will find the same article.??????

Does that mean Alan gets paid twice?

He would have done if you hadn't let me know.

Now he'll come round and duff you up instead.

the cheapest approach is merely to find one of the Minicraft series of drills - I have had one for years + bought another smaller version at a rummage sale

The thread is 8mm x 0.75 - merely cutting off 5mm from plastic housing on the Maplin version of the drill allows the chuck to fit + fully close - if you buy a die then easy to make a fitting eg that for my Perris lathe on a MT0 taper is shown

The much better Dremel unfortunately is a 9/32 x 40tpi and I havn't seen chucks to fit this (maybe available in the non-metricated USA only ?

You may not be be paying the author again but can we expect subscibers to both editions to get a bit of a rebate? laugh

I'm afraid we aren't Absolute Radio with a no-repeat guarantee.

Unfortunately must have I omitted to mark the original as used on my spreadsheet, probably because, as this time, I used it when we needed a short article to fill an unexpected gap.

I personally don't like the drill chuck arrangement on these small drills, a collet arrangement is alot sounder for concentricity from a design point of view.

Surely the author should get repeat fees?

That would certainly be the less complicated legal route to follow...

Pay the man twice as it is not his fault the article has been duplicated and the owners of the magazine have received full payment from the buying public for both magazines.

For the record, we don't pay repeat fees; the amount we pay for articles is significantly better than similar publications partially to reflect the fact our agreement includes giving us a licence to republish without further payment.

As for an error like this, any other arrangement is a private matter between us and the author.

"a collet arrangement is alot sounder for concentricity from a design point of view" - I agree but the collets as provided with the 'el cheapo' maplin drill grip only on about 1mm of drill shank and have very little range - a small chuck is fine after all it is a handheld non-ergonomic tool (the small donor minicraft drill was a much better designed mini pistol drill but had no speed control nor softstart)

I have a set of proxxon collets which range up to 3.2mm which is ok, i dont think a drill much bigger than that would be appropriate for it's size. They are made of steel, i believe dremel do a similar set made of aluminium.

.

Why are some people getting involved in this.? - I would strongly imagine that the T&C's of submitting articles (and photographs) will allow for repeats and multiple use if required. If so that 'legal route' will be pretty much a none starter.

If there IS an issue I would think that the original author himself will be contacting the publishers. - As I said this all depends upon the terms of the original contract and multiple use is a common type for many magazines.

As for cheating the readers.! - It seems it was a very small human mistake for a short article. Bit like turning an extra 10 thou off that bar by mistake. .............. We have all done it.! wink

I think you have got of lightly Neil, I was expecting a flood of complaints that the text refers to Fig 1 and you have not included Fig one in the regurgitated versionwink 2

It is strange how some people want a refund if something is published twice but I have never seen anyone ask where to send a donation when Neil puts up old articles on the websitedevil

Come to think of it, Jason ... I appear to be one of very few people who have even thanked him.
