It ought to work OK for most things, but will you be able to stand the smell?

I use it in my Elliott Vertical Head only, as there is a bevel drive in there, are you thinking of bedways?

I would think it a bit too viscous for those, I use ISO 5 Hyd oil for my bedways as it evaporates after time, not leaving them sticky for dust and grit to accrue.

Had a small amount of hydraulic oil leak out of a jack in my boot a month ago. The castor oil like smell is just starting to fade...

Should be good for the changegears, Apron, or Norton box, but a bit viscous for bedways etc. It will be slow passing through drip feed oilers!

As Neil says, Hypoid oil does tend to have a characteristic odour; reminiscent of the "ginger tom next door"

Some gear oils are corrosive to brass and bronze, check that it is suitable for copper based alloys or that there will be no contact with vulnerable parts.

My Neighbours certainly remembered that one, reminding me about it for many years!

The corrosive effect is Sulphur in the oil, it was discovered that it was damaging copper.brass etc. No doubt it would cause staining on beds etc.

There are some synthetic oils of that genre. The sulphur was added as it acted as a sacraficial part of the sliding action of the gears and stopped wear.

One of my very earliest memories, being taken to a "Scramble" (not Motocross in those days) with my parents. Having a picnic with cold sausage sandwiches, that tasted of Castrol R, there was so much in the air. Even just a whiff brings back very strong memories.

Castrol R must be one of the world's most wonderful smells. I first savoured it at Silverstone in the 1950s (anyone remember the Daily Express Trophy races?), and at the grass track races on Ben Pearson's field in my home town on Spalding. I used it in a control line FIA racer in the 1970s, and I thought it had disappeared until I visited a Kart race meeting a few years ago. Talk about nostalgia............

Castrol R was definitely the smell of speedway and grass track. Oxford speedway is no more and grass track and motocross seem to always being moved on by the nimbys. The ridgeway was a good fun ride until the utterly selfish walkers got it banned, just how many miles of footpath do they need, there must be tens of thousands of miles of footpath only so why do they need to take all the RUPPs as well?

Oh dear how time flies, it must be 40 years since I watched speedway at Wimbledon, still remember the smell though. Just to be super pedantic, sorry, speedway racers should be using Castrol M, the castor oil for methanol fuels.

Motorcycle "Scrambling", that takes me back! TV sport in the 60s, dominated by the Lampkin family of Silsden, near my home town of Keighley, out of a back yard shed.
