Michael Gilligans comment on the scrap value of silver is not really as relevant as it sounds.

.

Tim,

You disappoint me ...

Not only by your accusation; but also by your omission of an apostrophe. surprise

MichaelG.

On the BBC News this morning there was a report of a man in Bristol adding or removing incorrect apostrophes from signage, they would not identify him.

I wonder!winkdevil

Yes, I watched that ... but was mildly offended .

He has the arrogance to 'correct' the punctuation ... but his work leaves us with ugly typography !!

The true polymath would feel the need to appropriately adjust the kerning.

Good for him. Over here (Canada) there's a supermarket chain which, as part of its lurid signage - on each of their many stores - has the boast "Won't be Beat".

Just once I'd like to get up there in the dead of night and add the "en".

Commercial signage producers have long since given up any pretension to good grammar. Not really up to speed on modern 'shorthand' either. ... Local Lidl's banner to departing customers "See you next time". For relevance, read Guy Martin's biography.blush

There used to be a business in a nearby town that sold office supplies.

It often bemused me when I walked past and noticed the signage 'STATIONARY SUPPLIES'.

Presumably they had slow moving stock face 21

Amuses me when you read the label on a bottle of water and it says "Still Water"

3 weeks later it's still water ??

What is to be made of this on the outside of a box containing a prescription drug:

" Pharmacist: Dispense with enclosed Consumer Information leaflet. "

... Can't even make out the hologram ... is it supposed to be a £ sign ?

.

I believe 'hologram' is a slight exageration [pretty sure that some of the literature said 'like a hologram']

< etc. >.

.

Hacksaw,

Here is the promotional illustration:

As you now know ... the real thing is, by comparison, disappointing.

Gave one to our 8 year old grandchild. The response 'granda, make sure no one gives you a euro coin instead of a new pound coin as they look very similar.' Out of the mouths of ................ .

If they do, keep it. The Euro will soon be worth more than the pound the way it's going crying

Yes, what a self opinionated pendantic p**t he is. Having the audacity to show up the burger flipper and predicktive phone texter generation.

Neil,

They were obviously struggling to describe it

... as was I, when I wrote : "It appears to be rather more like a reflective version of those ghastly 3D postcards with a prismatic overlay."

I know of no proper term to describe what the Royal Mint has produced ... But the 'sin of mis-description' is no worse than describing a Newtonian Telescope as 'rather like a refracting telesscope'. ... i.e. The function is similar, despite the optics being quite the opposite.

MichaelG.

.

P.S. it is, of course, quite emphatically,NOT a hologram.

We just had a new jukebox installed in the pub and it will not take the new pound coin, not thinking too far ahead there.

When I was a kid, I wanted to get a big bag full of self adhesive 'letter-I' shapes, and spend a night adding them to TO LET signs. Puerile, eh?

I found one. It probably counts as a form of ripple picture, the predecessor to lenticular printing.

As a short term fix, collect a load of old £1 coins behind the bar specially for the Juke Box then swap them for new coins from Customers who want to use the Juke Box

It is self recycling when the Juke Box is emptied (perhaps?).
