![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | Although a lot of it is point less to me there are times when FB, Twitter etc can be useful. With a fair number of people taking their builds or restorations onto these type of sites you could be missing out on useful material, for example I am making a 1/4 scale Otto Langen engine which was just going to be scaled up from some available drawings but having over 1000 photos of a 1:1 replica being built has allowed me to add far more detail to my version and correct details that were wrong on the drawings no doubt due to teh designer having limited ref material at the time. I have my G-mail account set to put all ( few I follow) the social media posts into one area so they don't get in the way of normal e-mails and can look at them as and when I want rather than being distracted by endless notifications. |

![]() 2747 forum posts 123 photos | I'm with Jason on this one regarding using separate email addresses for different areas of ones life. Twitter is only really useful when on a mobile device and I never look at it my PC but I find tweets from the local police giving details of traffic, road closures etc very useful. I have followed ME since it started but in all honesty cannot say I would miss it if I was not a follower. I do think there are just too many social media sites, I occasionally look at FB and have seen suggestions by disgruntled Yahoo group members to move their group to FB. As bad as Yahoo is I just dont see how FB would be better as I find FB really lightweight and somewhat transient. Ian P |

If someone wants to know what I'm doing, then either come and see me (preferably) or phone me (undesirable now due to a drastic hearing loss). In fact, I've now taken to refusing to give out my mobile 'phone number on the grounds of it being switched off 95% of the time. Shaw Peter You may not want people to know what you are doing but they will only find out if you tell them (by Tweeting), however you might want to know what other people (or organisations, companies etc) are doing. You can look at Twitter without posting anything which is something I found out about a year ago. Before then, like you, I could not see the point of it and never thought it would be of use to me. I now know it is. Ian P |

I'm not offended. I'm 63, but pretty computer savvy - I have a desktop computer, laptop, an iPhone and iPad, and spent my latter working life at a computer all day. I belong to lots of forums, and I use Facebook and WhatsApp, but have never really found a personal use for a Twitter account. I have already got too many things to do and not enough time to do them in, but that's one of the drawbacks of retirement! |

Twitter and Facebook etc appear to be the information sharing media of choice for a large number of people, therefore I reckon it makes sense for ME and MEW to have a presence on them. That’s my two Pennyworth on the subject anyway! Edited By V8Eng on 13/03/2018 23:08:53 Edited By V8Eng on 13/03/2018 23:09:20 |

Apparently it's a great way to reach the yoof etc etc. I deleted the accounts I was forced to create within minutes of the course ending. I've not even been tempted to look at either since. I live for the day when Facebook falls and people have to get on with life instead of moaning on about it online. Heard something on the news that millenials (the yoof) don't answer their phones or the front door to avoid confrontations; very much like the orange idiot across the pond firing people by Twitter. |

I must admit, I'm really taken aback by how offended most people are. You know, no-one is forcing anyone to look at twitter! - or forcing me to use it. . Neil, I suspect that some of the offence was taken in reaction to the first line of your opening post. ... Yes, I noticed the smiley thing at the end, but my initial reaction was: "... the rot is setting in" MichaelG. . . Edit: Out of courtesy/curiosity, I have just opened the link that you provided I found nothing there to tempt a return visit.

... As no forum members can be described as 'reactionary old gits'... Neil Well there you go. You've completely misunderstood your constituency. This is the mirror image of Bob Brown's 'Helping Young People' thread. In that one, we express great concern that young people don't know what we know. In this one we reject any notion of understanding what the young are up to. It's inevitable. Their world is not our world. They do learning, we have experience. In the end youth always wins. They have the advantage of building on our achievements, whilst we become set in our ways and then die. Enjoy life while it lasts and give the other a guy a break. Even if he is a spotty ignoramus! I don't either but I'm not about to shoot at Neil when he sticks his head over that parapet to try and stay in contact with the yoof. Who probably think this forum is laughably antiquated. Lesson learned Neil. If you're going to post something like this again make sure you can lock the topic immediately so you don't get a barrage of harrumphs. If you want to reach people you have to go where they are. |

![]() 1531 forum posts 44 photos | IanP, My limited understanding of these so-called social accounts is that they are mainly used by people with nothing better to do. In which case they won't be interested in what I'm doing, and I certainly aren't interested in what they are doing. Those people who do know what I'm doing, do indeed know what I'm doing, if that makes sense, so there is no need to tell them. Ditto those people who I want to know what I'm doing, do indeed already know. Hence as far as I am concerned there is next to nothing to be gained by me from Twitter. On a general note, I have over the last few months (since it got too cold to go in the garage) spent far too long using this electronic bunch of tricks. I had been thinking that I might, just might, be able to get in the garage and have a tidy up and a memory refresh of what I was doing sometime last year. Only problem is that "The Beast from The East" looks like arising again. Bazyle, I'd like to think that I might experience what you are saying. Sadly, if I'm still around in 40 years time, I'll be in the running for being one of the world's oldest men. Mind you, I might even be able to meet my great-great-grandchildren. As it is, I think I've a good chance of seeing my grandsons' weddings, a reasonable chance of seeing my elder granddaughter wed, and very unlikely to see my younger granddaughter wed, more's the pity.. Regards, Peter G. Shaw
