Its a sad fact that you can count the number of hours spent in the workshop on the fingers of one hand of late. So i set about 'doing a bit' sunday morning, whilst looking after HG! Sad to say that in 2 hours I managed to get two holes drilled. She aint keen on the myford either, had to plonk her out in the garden so she didnt scream every time it started up. Wifey didnt seem too impressed by any of this, but a man's got to try!

Are you sure it was the machine and not your technique that caused the screaming?

Full marks for going boldly though.

Since it is well known that babies like the vibration and hum of being taken for a drive which sends them to sleep try balancing her on the headstock while it is running. Suggest you invest in a shaper too as later on the back an forth movement can substitute for a pony ride.teeth

Our first born was plonked in her car seat on the bench where she found the soporific effect of the parent hand filing hundreds of nameplates hard to resist!

Fizzy

Sorry to be so thick, but I have followed this thread and still cannot work out what 'HG' is.

I am getting the impression its a person but after that I'm stuck.

Its not sad Fizzy, workshop time can wait a little as your offspring will ultimately give you more pleasure (and pain!) than drilling a few holes ever will. Mine is grown up now and has littel impact on workshop time .

One thing that has significantly reduced productivity is the weather! This forum is much quieter too when the sun shines.

Who is Fizzy trying to kid - He was so busy playing with his adored and (understandably besotted with) baby daughter that's why he only got two holes drilled.

Are baby-size ear defenders available???

Just to be a little bit serious, we had a black Labrador dog who became extremely distressed when I started up my lathe, a Warco 220. So much so that if he was in the garage/workshop with me, he would attempt to open the doors to escape, and once outside would run as far away as possible.

Given that both dogs and babies can hear much higher frequencies than adults, it makes me wonder if in both instances our respective lathes are producing some sort of high volume ultra-sound which we as adults are unable to hear, but can be heard by babies and dogs to their distress.

Regards,

Peter G. Shaw

Robbo was nearly right...Miss Harriet Grace, born first may @ 13.24hrs. Now weighing in at 10 lbs! Point noted re electrical harmonics. I seriously did consider attaching the handle of the car seat to something reciprecating...then thought better of it. Will miss both workshop and HG till weekend as im on the big metal bird thing again first thing tomorrow!

Fizzy,

Don't forget to take loads of videos of her growing up.

Took four DVDs (17Gb) of GD to family yesterday, and mother watched some of the events that she had completely forgotten about.

Father has head in starting a business, so his priorities are elsewhere at present.

Mother was so happy at watching them.

BUT, watch out for new generation taking to new technology with aplomb.

Whenever I produce my iPhone to film her, or open my iPad, she (17months) immediately stops what she is doing and clambers all over me to get her hands on either device, including Dad's PC when he opens it, much to his, happy, annoyance as she leaves the screen smudged.

Seeing her push icons and buttons as well as swipe fingers and hands across the screen makes me wonder what's in stall for her and her generation and the technology that they will have at their finger tips.

She becomes totally absorbed and is completely at ease with either device as well. Amazing.

Geoff - Totally whacked after day out yesterday
