Perhaps OT, but does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

There are no prizes, I'm on a pension.

First Clue - It was laying at the roadside.

Could it be a winding from a pole transformer? Is the wire copper? Have you had any lightning strikes or power outages lately?

(If it is copper, you should have taken it home...)

Could it be the remains of an old (wood) water pipe?

Looks to me like a rotten old fence post (strainer) with the remains of the fencing wire still attached - was it about the same diam as a telegraph pole?

Tony

Hi Sam, yes I to think it may be an old wooden pipe/tube for something or other. It may have been built a bit like a barrel, but instead of steel bands, it has the wire wound round it from one end to the other and then it would have been covered with a bitumus impregnated felt type material to make it leak proof.

Regards Nick.

Hi again sam, maybe it was a tunnel under the road for small animals to get from one field to another.

Regards Nick.

Wot? I didn't know Australia had devalued it's millimetres! Is it part of Ms Gillard's 'moving forward' plan?

Andrew Johnston! Naughty boy!

5/16" was meant to be my Third Clue.

Who knows which direction our current politicians are going. They appear to be clue-less.

Steve,

No, it's got nothing to do with kangaroos or any other type of non-human animal.

Could this be another clue?

OK, here's my next clue - I'm told that it could be more than 100 years old!

I went back this morning to take some more pictures, and some bu. . . .er (sorry, someone) had nicked it.

Anyway, here's another picture I took yesterday, to provide you with a closer look.

Notice the rings pressed into the black stuff, and the join lines running along the length.

Tomorrow, I'll post some more pictures. It will then be clear to all what a surprising bit of junk this really is.

Regards,

Sam

I have a feeling that if it is in a land where you cannot see Polaris it may be a letter box. Dick
