My suggestion is powder coat.

Thread: Chattering when cutting with countersink tool on lathe
11/07/2022 19:30:29

Hi Y C Lui,

Being mean (dead tight) I would not buy a countersink, I ground a short 1/2" drill bit to 90 ͦ point. Seems to work fine with no chatter.

Hope this helps.

Thread: Removing a J2 arbor from a drill chuck
27/03/2021 16:05:23

Hi Douglas,

I would make a new pair of split wedges; probably quicker than hunting for the old ones. The split wedges I made work a treat.

Hope this helps.

Thread: Overseas Distribution to restart
19/07/2020 20:11:56

Hi Neil,

Great news that we will soon be receiving MEWs again, however you say the next one sent will be 295 as the last issue I have is 292 does this mean issues 293 and 294 will not be sent? I would hate to miss them!

I would use the local saw doctor.

Thread: Bantam - warped compound gib
11/11/2019 17:55:41

Hi Mark,

It would probably be quicker to make a new gib strip than to try to straighten your bent one. You could try heat and cold to straighten it, heat with a blow torch on the concave side then cool on the convex side with a sopping wet rag; a bit of a dark art which I have only seen done once.

Hope this helps.

Thread: 4 jaw chuck axial allignment
19/08/2019 18:44:22

Hi Martin,

The vendor should replace it as "not fit for purpose".

Peter.

17/08/2019 19:39:57

Hi Martin,

Did you make sure the mating faces between the chuck and lathe spindle were scrupulously clean before you assembled them, tiny particle of swarf can throw your chuck out.

If the mating faces between chuck and spindle are clean check that the face of the spindle is running true.

If the lath/chuck is old/secondhand the chuck jaws may be out of alignment ( knackered).

Hope this helps.

Quite right Neil. A bush that shrinks will tighten on it's shaft.

Thread: Problem with slitting saw arrangement...
06/06/2019 19:22:06

Hi Collin,

I always use a key in a slitting saw otherwise they just slip on the mandrel.

Hope this helps.

Thread: broken calipers
03/04/2019 17:33:36

Hi Antony,

When the spring on my caliper broke I used some high tensile steel tube to make a replacement. I skimmed the tube on the outside and inside on the lath, then cut a piece off and shaped it by hand, after which I hardened it and tempered it down to blue. As a replacement spring it seems to work fine.

Hope this helps.

Thread: Castings
09/03/2019 17:48:29

Hi Adrian,

If you are going to make the patterns you may as well go the hole hog and do the casting yourself.

Thread: Milling Collet Jammed in Taper
05/03/2019 16:37:47

Hi Martin,

Make a couple of split wedges to fit between your collet chuck and the end of the spindle, a small tap on the end of the wedge will free your taper.

Thread: Slitting Saw Arbor
31/10/2018 18:11:42

Hi Vic,

I make my own arbors and all ways use a key otherwise the blade slips (I may be a bit heavy handed). In my opinion if the blades were intended to be used without a key the manufacturers would not have included a keyway.

Hi Rainbows,

It wouldn't be a left hand thread?

Thread: Bandsaw blades
04/03/2018 17:35:12

Hi Chris,

Before you do anything as this is a new blade return it to your supplier for repair or replacement.

Thread: Any uses for damaged cutters?
18/12/2017 16:28:14

Hi Andrew,

I have a slitting saw with teeth missing, still cuts fine. ( The critical thing is sharp teeth.)

Thread: Moment of madness

Hi Sean,

If its good money and you can buy better, sell.

Thread: Centec, stuck milling arbour
13/10/2017 18:01:58

Hi Rainbows,

I have no knowledge of your machine, however, if the taper is a morse taper or similar I would recommend you make a pair of split wedges to fit between the arbor and spindle nose. The use of wedges is a lot gentler than beating the back of a taper yet generates much more separating force.

Hope this helps.

Peter,

Thread: S7 Tail stock
29/09/2017 18:54:26

Hi Alan,

I just use a piece of studding or a sawn off bolt.

Peter
