Used Myford S7 makes £8k at auction!

Hi all,

is this a record at auction?

nice used S7 with gearbox, milling attachment, dividing head and HUGE amount of tooling in excellent order just made £6000 hammer price + £2000 commission at a local auction!

Estimate was £1500- £2000

lots of other engineering related items also did very well, I could not get close to any of them but got some nice other items.

As a long time Super 7 user but now Warco I think you are crazy paying 8k for a 7 series Myford, so many more capable machines for less than that. Just my opinion.

33% commission? How much did the seller have to pay?

It’s not just a lathe, it’s got a milling attachment a gearbox a dividing head and a load of tooling, doesn’t matter if you think someone’s daft paying that amount for it, lots of people consider it daft to buy Chinese rubbish Most probably about time all the armchair engineers on here stopped bitching about what lathe is best and got out into their workshops and made something with whatever machines they have got. Just my opinion.

Commissions vary widely, I do not know the vendors commission on this lot.

some of the “posh” auctions around here are 30%+ buyers plus 17% + vendors plus lotting fees, insurance , photos etc all on top.

pretty close to 50% of hammer which is outrageous.

dealers and traders have to put their money where their mouth is and take losses on the chin or find another way of earning a living.

Auction house have zero exposure themselves and do not even have to back up their “professional” estimates.

Quite a good game to be in really….

So as I understand it, the auction house charges the seller a commission for selling the item, then turns around and demands a payment from the buyer as well. Seems quite iniquitous to me, charging twice for the same service, and creating a conflict of interest too. Who are they acting for, the buyer or the seller?

I think it is great. The buyer got a bargain really, or else would not have made the bid. The sellers estate has done well too. I think it is win win all round. Lots of accessories went with it, some of which I have never seen with a Myford before.

I'd consider it daft to buy Chinese rubbish.

To clarify my position, I should add that there is plenty of new Chinese machinery that is clearly not rubbish, and plenty of used British machinery that is.

Is there a link to the auction site or any pics of the lathe and pile of "huge amount of tooling".

If the S7 was in as-new condition, the buyer probably got a reaonable deal.That is about what Myford sells them for new these days I believe.

But the gearbox is worth about 1,000 quid on its own. Myford dividing head about 500, and Rodney milling attachment (if that's what it was) a similar amount. Tooling, depends on what was there. So he basically got all that extra for the cost of a bare new lathe.

That said … there does seem to be rather more ‘after-market’ kit there than I would have expected at that price.

Looks like I might have to stick with my Chinese Craftsman rubbish machine for a while longer !

Thanks Tony. That is a pretty massive pile of accessories, much of it brand new looking in the box from Myford, some from Soba. And is that a Rodney milling head under all that bubble wrap?

But the lathe itself looks pretty good. In the pic showing the serial number, the factory surface grinding marks on the bed ways looks untouched. Quite possibly close to "as new" condition. Plus it's a long bed, which is a premium. And looks like power cross feed.

Probably a good deal for whoever got it, versus the price of a brand new lathe without all the extras.

Serial number, I think, dates to circa 1980. Wonder if it was reconditioned by Myford along the way, or just amazingly well preserved???

A country Manor House attic sale!

All I seem to find in the attic is junk that should have been dumped years ago.

Having said that I only Live in a small bungalow anyway.

I regard 8k as next level money, fancy CNC stuff etc

Of course some of our old working kit is bound to become collectible soon, like with those old Unimat bits which can be very coveted by collectors. They don't use them they admire them and eventually sell on at a profit

I'll say. If you scroll through the following lots on the auction site, there is an unbelievable amount of wonderful workshop gear from micrometers to power hacksaws. It's a wonder the attic didn't collapse under the weight.

This what 8,900 Quid (inc VAT) gets you at Myford today NEW SUPER 7

Same machine but without the long bed or any of the large pile of accessories.

I don't know how many they sell at that price. Never come across anyone who has actually sprung for one. Must be an elite (very) few out there somewhere I suppose.

Wow!

I joke about having an 'every day chuck' and a 'Sunday chuck' (both three jaw) but it looks as though the owner of that lathe can have a different chuck for each day of the week and two on Sunday.

Shame about all the plastic.

There seems to be brass swarf so not a virgin machine.

Yes, I wondered if he was some sort of chuck collector!

Certainly not virgin, but we all know it takes not much brass to make that much mess. Stuff goes everywhere. I use a trick an old boy taught me when he ripped the side out of his fag packet and jammed it over the tool bit shank as an inmpromptu swarf shield. Works a treat. That tiny bit of cardboard right there within a half inch of the cutting tip stops 95 percent of those tiny chips that like to get everywhere.
