Why are so many people on this site so reluctant to say "ebay" and refer to it as that Asian company, Fleabay or that company which cannot be mentioned but have no problem with saying Amazon, Lidl, Aldi, etc ???????

If we are to ban the naming of manufacturers or suppliers, we would also have to ban names like Myford, Starrett, Mitutoyo, etc.

I doubt they know themselves. They probably turn around 3 times widdershins, clutching a rabbit's foot before using the euphemisms too.

I guess there is no reason. Not on this site. Not sure about bangood though. I buy most of my goods from ebay. If i could find them at the same or even near the same price from sponsors i would buy them. But nearly every thing i have bought for the mill & lathe new, are nearly twice the price for the same item. You could be led by the myth that only sponsored products are good & you can send them back. But so far i have had no complaints about most of what i have bought from ebay. An example is my todays delivery of a boring bar with 9 inserts & a MT2 arbor M10 in a pretty plastic box. For a grand total of £44.99. The nearest i could find on here was £95.74. Some will say they are not the same but that is not another argument i want to get into. So the profit markup must be quite high. So while ever they are so expensive elsewhere then ebay is my goto.

I buy many things on ebay auctions latest many new tipped tools and loads of tips to fit them most are suitable for my Myford the tips also fit my larger tools.

Not the cheapest but a dealers price would probably be double.

Any disputes have eventually been sorted something you have to be watchful of are used equipment as the odd seller can be economical with the condition of it.

Paul, I would say a good number of those not mentioning e-bay do not understand the changes to the Code of Conduct that happened a few months ago, maybe if you have a read of that you will be able to see why there is no problem mentioning e-bay or the companies you mention such as Myford, Starrett, Mitutoyo, etc.

You will also hopefully see that the "Asian company or that company" are not e-bay.

Jason, a large chunk of the stuff sold on ebay is probably worse than the stuff sold on " that company" aka Banggood..just saying...

Chris, Just pointing out to Paul that "Asian company" is not referring to e-bay as his post reads to me.

I don't make the rules - just have to try and apply them and e-bay links tend to take more time to check as there is a need to decide where the item may be coming from as business seller at the bottom of the page does not always match there the item location says.

From my perspective, if you don’t mention the name the post does not elevate web site on search engines. They get more than enough to put them close to the top of the list, while more deserving sites are pushed down the list.

I personally don’t see why I should help them, in any way, with their advertising.

I've always thought that those who use 'fleabay' or 'evil bay' or whatever have either an axe to grind or a some kind of complex by their seemingly childish and derogatory attitude in being able to refer to this correctly.

Personally I have used Ebay for many years - I have never recieved anything that I wasn't happy with and have only been 'conned' once and not recieved goods twice in all that time. Irritating at the time yes but payment was returned immediately an issue was raised and resolved.

It seems like I must be the only one but I am also a happy Banggood customer - so far anyway. The milling cutter bought sometime back performs as well with it's original tips as I could wish for but I don't push it on my bench mill like I would have at work on a bloody great universal mill. Impressed with it I bought a different type but was sent another the same as previously bought. The issue was quickly resolved to my satisfaction. Also bought a superb wallet and very warm jackets that haven't fallen apart yet either.

So it's very much 'Ebay' for me

I know what you mean Jason, and I understand it would be impractical for moderators to check every posted link for compliance with the COC. I was guilty in the past for such links, but nowadays, out of respect for the work you guys do I refrain from posting such links (even tho I still disagree with the COC )

Although I'm not based in the UK I have purchased my lathe and mill from Warco, placed orders for tools from ARC, won bids on ebay and ordered from Banggood. I hate sweeping statements such as this or that chinese company sell only crap and junk... some items may be, but not everything is. I'm happy with most my purchases, I do my homework well before.

980 transactions on Ebay mostly good so will continue to use them, also use Arc, Warco, Cromwell tools, Cutwel, Banggood, etc.etc. These days most of the tooling & other stuff is made in China or India, my new Bosch dishwasher was made in Turkey, another case of 'badge engineering'

Not quite 'just a series of keyboard characters", it's a member of the Emoticon family called a 'Sparkler'. In this example it means 'This is a Bigger Thank You Than Normal'. The sender took the trouble of jazzing the message up. We've no idea if it's sincere or not!

It's in the same category as the Frame around the Mona Lisa.

I hate emoticons.

Re ebay. Many Brits dislike providing free advertising to vulgar commercial operations. "Bay of E" is a polite euphemism in the same category as "I am going to see a man about a dog".
