Re smoke rings issue 4642: next time I want some advice on a Model Engineering topic I'll ask the Chief Medical Officer. On the other hand, perhaps Mr Editor should stick to his last

Not a clue as to what you are on about, but from the few words it does not look good. indecision.

It is not essential to be an expert to have an opinion about anything.

Come on V8Eng you nearly did it. This is like whatever you do, don't look in the bag.

Somehow can see this thread getting canned.

"His last what?" Said the shoemaker.

Been some prime twaddle in Smoke Rings periodically over the last year or so from the latest chair occupant in the ed office.

Totally agree with you Jeff , I think his latest blurb really takes the biscuit. If we need Covid 19 advice we have experts to inform us, I think he should keep his writing in our magazine to model engineering subjects and if he has to share his thoughts on Covid he should perhaps share his knowledge through The Lancet.

Not currently being an ME reader, the detail of this discussion is lost on me ... but I will just mention this ‘Editorial’ on micscape, which has attracted similar criticism:

"You"ll just feel rough for a few days"? Really? Thats what all those emergency rooms in Texas and California are full of since they ended lockdown? People feeling rough? Crikey. Ive felt rough on a few Sunday mornings but never that rough.

Hopper, I can't see that quoted text in Martin's editorial where are you getting it from?

We could all go back to those ' tried and trusted' remedies of the olden days.........like what finished Robin Hood.

@Jason: Sorry. From the venerable Mr Gilligan's linked editorial on the microscope forum. Cant comment on the ME editorial as no link posted so its a mystery. I presume it is nothing quite so bizarre as the microscopist's short sighted view.

Interestingly enough, yesterday the government issued an instruction to school staff not to wear masks as, according to Public Health England, 'they interfere with teaching' I actually agree, they do, but since when have Public Health England become qualified to issue instructions on an educational, rather than a health, matter?

As someone who has been involved in education for many years, am I now qualified to offer advice and instructions on health matters in return?

If so I am minded to change the social distancing distance to 2¼ cubits - with as much authority as their comment!

Perhaps they issued their edict after consultation with some education experts?

Will we all be issued cubit tape measures?

If teaching while wearing a mask, it is going to be really difficult eating at a restaurant while wearing a mask!

The social distance bit is easy

I don't have copies of ME from 1918 but it would be really interesting to read at least a passing mention in the magazine from then to show what people were thinking and to mark the historical situation. There must have been thousands of model engineers passing away then - do the adverts from 1919, 20 reflect that in a surge in Drummond round bed lathes being advertised? Were there letters to the editor asking fro advice on disposing of workshops?
Was there nothing in the period '39 to '45 that touched on life perhaps being a little different from a few years before?
