Flash player

Hi all, not sure if this is the same for everyone but I cant view any of the archived issues from 277 back. I get an Adobe Flash error saying that it isn't up to date but the newer issues work ok.

EDIT: Apparently this is only on Chrome browser. Internet explorer seems to work ok.

Just tried it and I get the same problem will let Neil and the back room boffins know.

I often get the message but this time clicking on the "get adobe Flashplayer" goes no further.

Working with Firefox.

We don't change anything with these archive issues, so it's probably some change in your browser - I had to re-tell Firefox to allow flash to run on this website, for example - typically happens whenever I update Firefox to a new version.

Check your permissions for Flash in Chrome, it may be blocking Flash on this site by default.

Flash is notoriously insecure, which is why most browsers block it by default.

It's not blocked by chrome, and newer issues of the mag work ok. Not sure really, was just bringing it to your attention.

The latest versions of chrome come with an inbuilt version of flash that Google maintain to minimise the risk.

If you are using Chrome you will probably need to follow this guide to enable it.

Because it is still better than HTML5 and Steve Jobbs at Apple decided he wouldn't support it on his systems, and the rest of the world follows Apple.

Google have announced that they are dropping Flash in 2020 - will no longer be supported or used by google

The newer issues use HTML5 not Flash so they don't need a player.

No don't start this off again!. Half the users campaigned for years for use to change to HTML5 and when we did there was nearly a riot from the other half...

Plain fact is that in the long term you will need a legacy player to deal with Flash so it's not good for new content.

Just to add another spoon to the pot... Flash will in all likelihood self destruct at the end of the year. link: So how are ME/MEW going to justify charging people with new digital subscriptions and no flash player available for older issues in the vaults? I speak as a person for whom then digital part of the subscription is the main draw. And frankly, saying maintain a legacy player doesn't wash for me as the fact is that Flash is very vulnerable to software exploits/malware etc. Looks like ME/MEW's hand will be forced in the not too distant future. I will be happy to be corrected, but as a Linux, MAC and Windoze (when forced to) user I think things are diverse enough in the software department. Any suggestions for compliance gladly received.

They may well point you towards clause 18 of the T&Cs

Though I expect it will stay as is, you will still have simple access to the HTML5 issues and upto the individual if they want to find a way to view older issues

Is anyone aware of a third party flash player? My Wi-Fi network is based on Extreme Networks access points. These use flash for the GUI. This means me and lots of other commercial users will have difficulty making changes. There is a command line interface (CLI) but this need more thinking about to use it. I know Extreme are bringing out a temporary fix with an App based on Chrome which will provide flash access. Trying to get a copy at present. Hopefully HTML5 controlled version of the operating system will come out in not too distant future.

This will become an increasing problem until and if the archive is rebuilt to all work with HTML5.
