What about the situation where the road is 'unadopted' and therefore does not exist as far as the local council is concerned, with of course the exception of gathering council tax.

Thread: Down the Drain

I thought the main reason for privatisation was to enable governments to raid the utilities pension schemes, after all who would want a final salary pension when they could have one provided by the big insurance companies?

I understand that the railway schemes were the only ones not ransacked.

Or does anyone know of a liquid that's denser that water and cheaper than Mercury?

Beer? laugh

I wish these subjects weren't discussed on this forum crying, all my plans for today are sidetracked whilst I consider the questions raised - and their solutions and try to remember when I was paid to do just this kind of stuff, how I did it.

In case there is any doubt I read this forum for just this kind of topic - many thanks.smiley

Thread: What kind of steel is this?

Could be 'key steel', if you heat treat a sample and it remains soft (relatively), that'd be my guess.

The two toolposts, front and rear, will be different due to the tool centre height and the tool size.

Thread: How do i machine this ( on the wonk)
15/02/2023 13:30:32

Between centres.

You need two centres in each end, in waste material, that'll keep the two ends in the correct position.

The offsets can be calculated or use a drawing, they'll be different for each end depending on where you want the intersection of the two halves to be.

One pair does the first bit the other pair do the other.

In a previous life I used to apply a chromate conversion coat to aluminium components already part of an assembly using a 'space qualified' cotton bud and Alochrome solution as part of a rework process.

The process was controlled well enough to satisfy an Nasa inspector.

A chromate conversion coating will provide resistance to corrosion and abrasion.

Thread: Prepping/cleaning CZ120 brass for epoxy resin paint.
26/03/2022 12:34:14

I would suggest something that contains a detergent and a fine pumice, that shouldn't affect your surface finish.

In the UK we have Cif, a cream cleanser which I have always found an effective cleaner prior to paint and resin applications, using a toothbrush or similar, it just rinses off in water, and generally shows a good 'water break test' surface.

The alcohol will only degrease, it won't clean out the nooks and crannies.

Washing up liquid contains lanolin, good for waterproofing sheep and for 'hands that do dishes', not so good for cleaning stuff.

Thread: Does anyone know what this is for?
26/04/2021 22:29:01

On the base top plate, bottom left, there's an eye bolt with the remnants of a piece of cable/wire/rope attached - strange place for a eye bolt.

Close by that, there's something lucking underneath the base plate, possibly a hand wheel.

If the bottom wheel grooves were a suitable shape and the speed differential correct then a wire in each groove would rotate, and possibly to be pointed or cropped in the area close to where the small pulley is.

I'd suggest the profile of the teeth on the bottom wheel would tell us much.

Thread: Duff memory stick
17/04/2021 21:58:02

I have used IsoBuster previously to recover data from a memory stick that contained data from a wildlife camera.

The camera and or/the card reader managed to corrupt the indexes, so the files were unrecoverable by normal means.

IsoBuster recovered all of them except the one being written at the time.

I believe there is a free version, the program is meant for 'iso' format files but it works lust as well on memory sticks.

I have no connection, just a satisfied user.

Mike,

The tapped holes are to hold the 'shoes' in place that the main pedestals sit on.

The shoes have small lips for wedges to lock and adjust the pedestals position, this is all to replicate the original (full size) construction.

In the full size engine these 'shoes' would be part of the top plate casting, then the erector would only have to chisel and file a small area for the pedestals, the wedges would allow him to adjust the position of the crankshaft to align with the rest of the engine.

Hope this helps.

Going back to javelins, could it be mounted on a post to straighten bent ones?

When I was a skool the javelins were all sorts of shapes, probably 'cos we didn't have one of these.

Thread: Sort of a Straw Poll
12/05/2020 21:21:27

I'm not often moved to post on here, but this topic has stirred me into action.

I've been thinking about this issue for a while, and at the moment I have more spare cash than I've ever had, I'm 67 and have a fairly dormant cancer.

I too remember mortgage rates at 15%, I bought my first house and was made redundant a month later - thanks Boss!

I now buy whatever I think I shall need, whilst I have the faculties and health to use it.

When I'm gone I won't care what happens to all my accumulated treasures and not one else will either.

I say treat yourself and enjoy it all while you can!

Thread: Thread Wires.
05/12/2018 22:20:46

I always use thread wires for threads and worms simply because it removes the 'cut and try' method, I know what I trying to achieve, so measure it, make a precise adjustment and its right - job done.

The only benefit of 'cut and try' method is a scrap bin full of nearly right bits!

Thread: Do you clean up your rough end
12/11/2018 17:09:48

Hi Bill,

Many years ago I got a reprimand from my manager for wasting mine and company time.

It was my habit to deburr or chamfer the ends of all metal bars, usually steel but also brass and Lt Alloy before they were placed on the storage racks in the stores.

So, I stopped, until later one individual gashed his hand bad enough to require hospital treatment, this was before the days of PPE.

I had a different working relationship with the manager after that.wink
