Lathe Identification

Afternoon all

After being suitably scared off from importing an Asian lathe I snooped about the internet a little bit for a lathe. It turned out to be facebook that provided in the end. It's very much a restoration project.

Can anyone recognise the make?

If that had any value, it wouldn't be thrown outside. Don't even think about it. The cost of restoring that meaningfully would buy you a decent secondhand UK made machine. I'd be looking for a Boxford if funds are tight.

That might have been worth (almost) looking at 20-30 years ago, but their are a lot of good second hand ones now because more people are leaving the hobby than starting. I.e they keep dieing.

Only last week, i picked up a really nice 3 1/2"model and offer of a really good myford 10.(not every bodies cup of tea, but nice and compact) i took the model but not the lathe.

Restoring a lathe thats been outside can be done successfully, but its hard work. All the time you are fixing the lathe you are not building models. Everybody's different in the way in which they approach their problems. Thats not mine.

Too late to advise against buying? Reads like it is his already. It is likely very cheap, but doesn’t look too cheerful at the moment.

Very cheap, cheerfulness still under debate. Looking at the current going rate of Boxfords on ebay the exchange rate is about 4-6 of these per Boxford. I could take the legs and sell them for a profit.

I did actually inquire about a mill but apparently the vice is to be kept.

Thankfully for me I'm a masochist and enjoy restoring machinery at deaths door (I don't think I showed the solid block of rust that was a ML10 I restored)

and an hot air balloon to go with the wicker basket?

De-rusting machines can be a rewarding hobby in itself.

It looks in real bad shape but I've seen worse restored. We can fix anything us engineer types cant we?

It looks sorta 1930-1940 ish to me. I've seen something similar and IIRC it was American. Can't remember the name though.

Come now chaps, you are seeing this machine at its very worst, It seems to be complete-ish, depends on what is at the headstock screwcutting end, which we cant see. Rust on cast iron has to be there for a long time before it does any damage, and this looks like rust where the sheet has been resting on the metal. If the price is right, it could be up and running in less than a week! You cut your cloth according to your pocket. I have two very good lathes, a Colchester student, and a Covmac, but when I bought them, they looked very rough, but even together, I paid less for them than some pay for a myford accesory!

I'm going to restore this lathe so hard it makes a Hardinge HLV look like an Adept (not even a super one!) just to spite those who say its a pile of scrap (even though it may well be)

Go for it Rainbow, I would, nothing too bad it can't be fixed and think of the pleasure you'll get when she does her first job, gotta rescue these old girls,keep us posted
