Any other out of touch members ?

I think I am out of touch with modern technology - Smartphone - what on earth is that ?

We have never had a television, mobile phone etc.

We have a 10 year old computer running Firefox, a landline and that is it.

Couple of old F===== you may say and you are probably right.

So does anybody else admit to being behind the times, living in the stone age. call it what you will ?

Answers of YES will be of comfort.

I would market a Smart phone as a very small computer that you can make phone calls with i.e access to emails and the internet, I dont use Facebook or any other off their type but I was issued with a smart phone and computer for my job so when I retired I carried it on, I do have a clever TV.

My beef with modern "tech" is that it keeps trying to connect me to things. I don't want to be LinkedIn, I turn my back on FaceBook and Twitters should be confined to the bird cage. Google does some useful things but why does it always want to know where I am? Oh yes and I have a "Smart TV" that is as thick as two short planks.

Fully paid up Luddite, don't want a smart phone; too many bells and whistles that will never be used, and others that may well prove to be a PITA.

Judged by what i see of folk who will surgery to part them from their smart phone, have no wish to join their ranks.

I would say that just because some of us use smart phones doesn't mean well walk around with them welded to our hands and ears, I worked away from home a lot and it was a good way of keeping up with the forums, seeing whats on in the world etc apart from that mine sits quietly on the side waiting to ring. My Daughter and I keep in contact with each other with an APP called whats app, it costs nothing to use and you can send photo's etc as well.

Smart phones have never appealed to me. My phone is 14 years old and does everything I need !.

My impression of the modern Smart? phone is like reading a Newspaper/Encyclopedia or seeing daily life through a letterbox. So I prefer to see what is going on around me, than use one of them.......... Each to their own !.

I do have a Kindle Fire HD though, along with 6 year old Laptop and Win 7. All I need really.

I'm all for progress, but would stick with 'Knob Twiddling' machines in the Workshop and old manual practices for as long as I'm able.

Up until this Christmas, I never owned a mobile phone...but as we were moving house and things were going awry, my youngest daughter thought it best if there was some way of getting in touch with me/the wife, if we were away from the house.....so she bought me a basic phone....

Must admit, missed having internet access for the first month or so in the new house....

Having access to the Internet in my pocket was not something I felt I had a desperate need for but now I have it I find it very useful. In unfamiliar territory it can be handy to check out the local restaurants and other facilities. Having a map of everywhere in your pocket can be useful. If you forget your specs then just take a photo of the menu in the dimly lit restaurant and the zoom in to read it. The car rescue organisations have apps that summon help and tell them exactly where you are, handy when you have forgotten the name of the last village. I rarely use a camera for taking scenic pictures but it is vey useful for taking a picture of a motor label that is out of easy view. If shopping you can check prices and specs on the spot and take a picture of item or spec for later ref. If you forget where you parked your car the phone knows where it was when it lost its blue tooth connection with the car. If you have music stored on the phone then you can play it on the car stereo via blue tooth. If you have a Nasdrive at home then you can access music and pictures from it or from any cloud storage you may use. An iPhone lets you use Apple Pay and is not limited to £30 like contactless cards. Sending a message with a full keyboard is much easier than using a number pad. Put a camera where you keep the dog and you can check it is ok. The uses are endless but you only need to go as far as you want but you may well find you use more and more features as time goes on.

To Billy Bean ... hooray ...I am not alone in my lack of interest in using the latest electronic gizmo ... my family and grand- children are all total addicts ... sometimes they can spend the entire day gazing at a scratty little screen ... just sat in a chair ... none of them want to come into the "shed" and cut a lump of metal with me ... can`t think why not ... some of them call me a dinosaur ... however, there always seems to be a stream of people wanting things mending in some way or other.

I have no objection to their lifestyle ... but if I joined them, it would not leave much time for the more important things in life ... i.e. cutting up pieces of metal and timber ... I have 6 or 7 methods for drilling holes in metal and wood ...funny thing is one of my favourite weapons is a hand-drill for small holes ... I have seen one of these in a museum along with files and my type of hand-hacksaw.

I think that puts me firmly in the stone-age, and I am happy to be there.

I have a £10 pay as you go mobile bought years ago and I use it for emergency calls if needed when we are out, my missus has a tablet as do I, no facebook,twitter etc for me and no banking online, tablet mainly used for political sites this forum and occasional purchases, we have a small smart tv for catch-ups, plenty of good stuff on internet as long as you keep clear of the bad stuff, we are both in our mid seventies and enjoy what we have

I don't know if it is an iPhone only feature but in settings, maps there is a switch to show parked car location, it will require the phone to be paired with the car blue tooth to work and uses the apple maps not the google map. I would have thought android would have a similar capability but I have no experience of android phones. I only bought a smartphone when I retired and had to give the company their phone back which was a basic phone.

I'm glad i'm not alone,can't remember how to turn the telli on, simple cheapy payg cellphone, landline, radio and outdated computer that still works and i,m happy.. sounds like we old timers know how to enjoy life in our workshop and elsewhere.

The sad part is that this "addicted to the smartphone" generation(*) is the one the current band of merry model engineers is supposed to pass the flaming torch to, but I fear that they will miss the catch!

Note(*) I think that includes about 50% of the 50 to 60 year olds, and 99.9% of anyone 50 or younger.

Martin Ranson -good reply -sounds as if our hand tools are of the same vintage - my drill has a round wheel on top that rachetsthe bit down as yo turn the handle.

I do have a small radio in the workshop set to Classic FM as enjoy the background music whilst fiddling around.

Mt wife just raised the same question on her ETSY shop forum and from America she hears of members who still have there own generators for electricity. some are still on dial up for computers whatever that means and one has a 50 mile drive into the nearest town.

So to Martin the fully paid up luddite - you are not alone.

PS - she just asked the lady who lives 50 miles out of town what she does for the doctor if she feels unwell - answer - get in the truck and go like hell and hope I get to the doc in town before I die.

The parked car facility only remembers the gps position when the blue tooth connection was broken, it does not know where the car is only where it lost connection with it. Trackers are a different animal.
