As it is going on wood, you could try a gilding product such as this:

851 forum posts 206 photos | Hi Rod I assume you mean a "smokebox" door ring on the front of an engine as opposed to the firebox door ? Are you sure you are looking for a brass finish, they were polished cast iron on a lot of full size engines, it was probably only a showmans engine that was fitted with a brass ring. Phil |

119 forum posts 8 photos | All so-called "Gold paint" is made from brass or bronze powders. However there are many different brass/bronze alloys used so that different shades can be obtained e.g. antique gold, bright gold etc. These paints would be available from signwriters or artists suppliers. However these paints are often not glossy. Would it be acceptable to use a flat paint and then a spraypak of clear gloss acrylic? Chas |

Also available in bronze and silver I think. It's a wax paste that can be buffed, and thinned with white spirit. I was quite impressed with the results. |

344 forum posts 12 photos | Phil - you posed me a question there. Well I looked through a couple of hundred shots of various smokebox`s and valve plates that I took yesterday at the Weald and Downland show. Burrells, Alchins, Garretts, Fowlers, Claytons, Dodmans, Fosters,McLarens, Aveling & Porter. With no exceptions all the lettering rings where brass. Actually found an old wilco can of gold spray, thanks to Rays reminder. Sprayed a test piece which had been finely sanded and primed with black. It was quite promising. See what another coat can do in the morning. I believe a clear matt topcoat on that may be near the mark. |

I bought a can of spray from Wilko which did a great job on metal. You beat me to it, I repainted an old metal loudspeaker, after preparing the aluminum horn and priming with zinc chromate, I used Wilko's gold spray on the outside and black in the mouth, it's actually passed the ultimate test and is now allowed to stand on a cabinet in the dining room.
