Wilkinsons/Wilko isn't the first place I'sd go to find innovative tooling, but I saw one today and popped in to see if they had the nut & bolt pick'n'mix Rik did so well at. They didn't.

They did have two adjustable spanners of a type I hadn't seen before, and that looks rather well designed, if not for shifting really tight fixings.

If it isn't clear in the pic, the moving element has a V-notch at each end. they also do a larger version, which I thought looked a bit lightly built for the sizes of hex it was for..

That's rather neat ...

Might also prove useful as an impromtu handle.

It's a bit rattly, but ideal to keep in the glove box.

Looks very neat but there is not a very good grip on the nut or bolt head. I think it is one for the display cabinet.

Stay away from adjustable spanners.

It look like the centre part come out and can turn around the other end having a smaller hex .

This look as it would grip in tight spots

These are my favourite unusual types, stanley ratchet wrenches

A set of three cover from 7-23mm on all metric and imperial nuts, not heavy duty, but darned useful

No, the centre part grips at each end so the smaller nuts can be gripped in smaller spaces.

It's the only adjustable I've seen that fits four sides of the nut, but things like this are not meant as substitutes for proper sockets & spanners, they are 'get out of jail free cards' for when you get stuck..

.

Is that 'rattly in the glovebox' or 'rattly in its construction' ?

[serious question]

surprise... I want one!

The small end would do perfectly for my mill drawbar, The 8mm spanners are always too small, needs to be longer for better leverage, I so hope my local branch has got them. Wilko's are makin' waves here.

Curious how every one try's to re invent the spanner. At the daily mail home exhibition in 1964 I purchased a couple of SURPANS a spanner cum wrench which gave equal pressure on 'two sides of a nut and you only had two spanners for All household jobs they were/are brilliant. But that said I have a toolbox full of spanners which I use for specific purposes. I think the human brain rebels at the term, and use of universal, there seems more comfort in a tool that has a specific use, or am I illogical?????????

"Wilkinsons/Wilko isn't the first place I'd go to find innovative tooling, but I saw one today " (spelling corrected)

Well Neil, you didn't find anything innovative. Here's a picture of its Grandpa before he went to China:-
