How to sharpen for free.

![]() 1181 forum posts 669 photos | About two years ago I got well and truly peed off with the prices of said products so did a search to find a way to sharpen them at home. I take no credit for the two methods other than saying they do work as I haven't bought new ones since I started using them. Methods: 1) Rub the blades against a piece of Denim or similar, opposite to the opposite to normal direction of course. Works the quickest on dull blades. 2) Ditto against body hair, arms and legs, and act like strops. Geoff - Waiting in anticipation |

10668 forum posts 2415 photos | Many years ago I knew a chap who had fled Hungary after the failure of the 1956 Uprising. The main thing he objected to about communism wasn't the ideology, it was that he couldn't get replacement razor blades. He told me the best way to keep blades sharp was to stroke the edge the wrong way across a glass sheet a few times. This had to be done after every shave without fail. I was a smooth cheeked boy at the time. Although I'm sure it was good advice, I've never tried it. Dave |

![]() 304 forum posts 28 photos | 45 yrs ago I bought a cut throat razor from our local tool merchants [kayes tools newport rd middlesbrough] a fantastic traditional engineers supply shop that served the local shipyards & engineers on teesside alas now gone, it was £3, 10 shillings, I've used it ever since, allthough I have a beard I still have to shave all round it!! I strop it each time & every 3-4 months a few strokes on an arkansas stone & off we go. |

280 forum posts 40 photos | Not quite a razor but I used to use surgical scalpels continuously in my work. When they got dull I used to strop them on the cardboard that I was cutting. It made a huge improvement in their sharpness but it only worked a couple of times before I had to replace the blade. Edited By norman valentine on 25/11/2016 20:28:35 |
