I thought we were currently in the space age.

Yes, definitely Stuart Turner, though the one in my possession has shaped legs for mounting.

Thread: Helium Ballon
15/08/2022 10:43:16

A normal helium filled party type balloon is made from Mylar foil and could well be sucked into a jet engine. If it hit the fan blades, it would probably merely be chopped up and spat it. However, the real danger lies if it is sucked into the core of the engine, when parts could melt and block vital cooling holes in the turbine section, which could lead to blade failure.

Absolutely fascinating video.

The vital importance of balance and yet in full size , I do believe the roots of the blades of some stages are

floating.

How does that work ?

The compressor blades usually have dovetail roots and the turbine blades, firtree roots to attach them to the disc that rotates with the shaft.

Get rid of the WD40 and use some proper penetrating fluid, like Plus Gas!

Give this a try - if it doesn't work, I don't know what will!

AFAIK, the craft paper layer is not the vapour barrier and is meant to be installed with that side away from the ceiling/plasterboard.

Thread: Makita LS1013 compound mitre saw - blade issue
07/12/2021 10:44:51

Have you by any chance replaced the blade recently? I only ask because my plunge saw started doing the same thing after I fitted a new blade - discovered the new blade was a smidge thinner than the old one, thus not tightening fully.

Thread: Kant Twist alternative?
26/11/2021 10:44:07

I 3D printed a pair last year - the design prints and works well, but they're really only suitable for carpentry-type projects as the material used is just a touch too flexible for reliably clamping engineering type projects made of metal.

Thread: Parkinsons
08/11/2021 13:20:33

Chris - if you haven't already, then get a referral to the neurology department of your preferred hospital, where they have the experience to treat you properly. I started on a fairly low dose of medication, but my consultant has gradually increased the frequency of the doses and this seems to have helped quite a bit. Parkinson's UK have lots of help and information on their website and can also put you in touch with local groups for further help.

I was diagnosed with Parkinsons about 3 years ago, though I'm sure I had symptoms before that. At the moment. mine's not too bad and doesn't really physically stop me from doing anything. I am finding that my dexterity is waning somewhat and certain tasks are a bit tricky when the shaking is bad, but I do manage to get most things done that I want to. What I am finding though, is that the actual will to do things is declining more than I would like - some days I find I just can't summon up the enthusiasm to do stuff and I also find that tasks which take more mental 'computing power' sometimes just defeat me totally. However, as you say, everyone is different, so I think you just have to accept things as they come. Being on the right medication for you can also help greatly, so try to be frank and honest about your feelings with whichever doctor is caring for you. I do hope you've been told that they can't stop the shaking, though I have found that mine has improved a fair bit with a stronger dose of medication.

Feel free to ask any more questions that you may have.

Thread: Post Office Deliveries

I do know that they are very short staffed in some areas, so perhaps that's the reason you seem to be getting delayed deliveries. Talk to your postman, if you can, and you'll probably be told the same as I was.

Thread: Painting PLA
19/08/2021 10:44:11

Use Halfords plastic primer as first coat, then Halfords primer/filler if required, then almost any compatible paint for colour coat, I'm fond of brush-on acrylics for my railway buildings, but other paints will also work. Top coat of clear lacquer if the item is going to spend any time outside.

Thanks chaps, the new cap should arrive tomorrow, so I'll let you know if that fixes it.

My Compact 8 lathe motor suddenly seems to be having a problem when starting - if the drive belt is actually driving the spindle, it doesn't start and just sits there and hums until I manually give the spindle a flick in the right direction. With drive belt(s) disconnected, the motor starts reliably in either direction every time. I'm fairly sure that the start centrifugal switch is working, as I can hear it click as the motor comes to a stop. The start capacitor looks OK, but if it's starting to fail, will this cause the lack of starting torque? I've got a new capacitor on order, but just wondering if anyone has any other thoughts.

Yesterday, I received what I considered to be a 'cheap' Moore & Wright 150mm digital caliper from Machine DRO - I'd half expected something cheap and nasty for not much more than £20, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quaality of what I received - seems well made and finished, in a nice plastic case and even included a spare battery! Moral of the story is, as others have said, to buy from a trusted supplier, preferable one in the UK. Well done, Machine DRO!

Thread: Have You considered getting a 3D printer
12/12/2020 12:56:09

I'd considered getting one for quite some time before I finally bought a Creality Ender 5 back in the summer. I've been impressed with the print quality from such a low priced printer, but found some tuning was required for better results - takes a little while, but usually worth it. I've also bought a couple of upgrades for it, as well as 3D printed one or two. It hasn't had much rest since I bought it and I'm finding it very useful for my hobbies; being able to now print stuff I never knew I needed previously! I did wonder about the requirement to be familiar with CAD before I bought it, as I've never been terribly au fait with any CAD package, but there's millions of 'things' on various websites that have been well designed by others and it's often easy to adapt or modify those to suit your own requirements. I've also managed to get to partial grips with Tinkercad and been able to draw a few simple parts for myself. Print failures are to be expected now and then, but usually only cost a bit of time and a few feet of filament. - my biggest to date was caused by a power cut around halfway through a 2 day print, so my printer now is powered via an Uninterruptable Power Supply which will run it for about an hour. Overall, well worthwhile getting it!
