I'm pretty sure it was meant to be dismantled after a few years . What's the projected life of our own idiotic uber hyper priced Millennium dome.? Nick |

![]() 2904 forum posts 448 photos | I thought I'd heard it was only supposed to stand for a few years and then it would be taken down again but never believed that would happen. Seems that the reviews are very partisan. Obviously the architects and contractors who built it are very proud of the technical and project management achievements. Bloody expensive and an easy target for any passing cynic of course. Doesn't help that Tory Blur made it his own pet project. "The cover of the Dome is made of PTFE-coated glass fiber, which has an estimated minimum lifetime of 25 years. The structure, designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership has a diameter of 365 meters (1200ft) and reaches a height of 52 meters at its center. It is twice the size of the original Wembley Stadium. The structure is expected to last until 2018. After that year, developers are allowed to demolish the dome and redevelop the site". The Emirates Air Line is another expensive legacy. Interesting to ride on if you are heading to the Dome or the ondon Excel exhibition areas but never seems to be remotely busy. |

![]() 1605 forum posts 83 photos | A lot of Parisians hated the Eiffel Tower. It was not accepted for many years. At least the Dome has had a use since 2000. I believe the Eiffel Tower was used as an aerial in the early days of radio. JA |

WHAT A WASTE OF MECCANO........................................................
Well it's a bit small for over 1000 parts. Interesting that they are pitching for the American market with the mention of the Brooklyn Bridge. I think I'd prefer this kit, less of a waste I hope all the xenophobics agree. |

![]() 6137 forum posts 893 photos | Britain is waaay ahead of France now we're about to build the most expensive object on the planet The "Government costing" is 20 billion...which means it will ACTUALLY cost around 40-50 billion What is the most expensive object on Earth? True or false? A new nuclear power station in the south-west of the UK will be the most expensive object on Earth. That's the claim about the proposed plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset - but has anything else ever cost so much to build? "Hinkley is set to be the most expensive object on Earth… best guesses say Hinkley could pass £24bn For that sum you could build a small forest of Burj Khalifas - the world's tallest building, in Dubai, cost a piffling £1bn ($1.5bn). You could also knock up more than 70 miles of particle accelerator. The 17-mile-long Large Hadron Collider, built under the border between France and Switzerland to unlock the secrets of the universe, cost a mere £4bn ($5.8bn). Edited By Ady1 on 29/04/2016 13:54:20 |
