Sir John to the Rescue

I needed to make a V anvil for my hardness tester today. Basically a disc with a locating spigot and a v across to hold round items. Turning the disc was straightforward but milling the V was a bit of a conundrum. I wanted to set the anvil up at 90 degrees, cut with an end mill so that I had a faced surface then rotate through 180 degrees and face the other surface. Not going to happen with the dividing head on my mill - completely out of headroom:

Sir John Stevenson rode to the rescue with one of his collet blocks. I'd only bought it because someone on here said they were good for holding round stuff in the vice:

I'd already drilled a small hole through the centre of the anvil so I knew that when the v was symmetrical with hole that the v centre would be in the centre of the anvil.

Useful item, a collet block.

I have 5C collet blocks, one of the workshops most useful tools.

I've got a single sq ER32 collet block and a couple of the 5C to ER32, very handy to have around.

I made myself a square, and a hexagonal block for both ER25 and ER 32, only to find later, that John had made a more refined and better looking version. Very useful!

Before anyone asks "Why square ones? You can, mill round all sides when its vertical in the vice"

Stating the painfully obvious, lying horizontal, one or more flats can be milled on long material, and it can be held closer to the cut.

Something few folks seem to have noticed is that the corners of the JS blocks are accurately chamfered and wide enough that you can hold them in the vice across the 'corners'.

This means you can divide by 8 with the square ones and 12 with the hex ones, although they obviously don't give the same height above datum when you do this.

John, never that the dog should suffer, as for the Tax man you can join my club as they have now taken me off self assessment and will not allow me to change my income to get re-assessed! Trying to talk to a Tax man is akin to speaking Esperanto as they do not seem to understand the gist of a letter nor it's intent and you receive a non sense letter in return. Also try two different tax code numbers from two different tax offices. Cambridge, Portsmouth and somewhere in Wales at one time with three different tax codes.
