I picked up a clamp type knurling tool today from a sale. It's a substantial thing made by marlco but it's missing the actual wheels. It's a long shot but does anyone know what size wheels I need? and where to get them.

You will be governed by the pin size & slot width in the arms.

The pin measures about 5.5x mm so I'm guessing it's 7/32". Chronos seems to have them with that bore size but it doesn't mention the width?

Despite its massive construction, the Marlco wheels are relatively small. You are right that the pin is 7/32"

The wheel diameter is 5/8", and the wheel width is 5/16" (a snug fit in the arm).

They are a joy to use, giving a lovely knurl without effort.

Brian Wood described a modification to fit his Marlco on his Myford lathe in EIM Jul 2014 (Vol 36 No 1) .

I also have one of those Marlcos. The right wheels are Series AJ, 5/8" OD x 5/16" W x 7/32" Hole.

I got my knurls, coarse, medium and fine R & L pairs from Cromwell a year or so back as being a decent price for known brand.

JHL which seem decent quality.

Around £15 each now which, I think, is more than I paid. With 20/20 hindsight I ought to have got the three grades of straight ones too.

Pins are ordinary hardened dowels, 7/32 x 5/8. I got a pack of 20 from Boneham for £ very reasonable but I was ordering other things too.

Totally agree that the Marlco is the bees bits for quick easy knurling. But it can't do everything.

Had to do 2.5 diameter the other day so my trusty Pratt & Whitney pivoting push knurler got hauled out. Once I'd remebered how to set the height, top knurl on work centre line not pivot, it did a good jiob quickly. Actualy I'd forgotten how effective it was.

I’ve bought a few Knurls at the shows over the years and they’ve all had 6mm or 1/4” holes for the pins.

Yes 7/32 does seem an odd size...maybe so you could only use wheels supplied by Marlco🙄

I bought a box of coventry die heads and amongst the goodies was an Austrian Miller Quick STR 2a knurling head. It is like a 3jaw scroll chuck with 3 wheels and will cover diameters 3mm to 25mm. It is made like a watch, a beautifully made job, with wheel pitches from .4mm to 1.2mm. It works on the cut knurl process I believe. It makes my home made 2 wheel job look very old fashioned.

I'm not brave enough to try and find out what new wheels might cost. ! Noel.
