Tidman Organ Engine Completed

What better way to start the New Year with a newly completed engine

As you may have seen in the Workshop Progress thread I have been physically working on this engine since the end of July, prior to that I made my own set of drawings based on photos taken of an example in a museum and a few others found on the web. As the museum photos came via a Member of ME forum and the Editor acted as go between I feel its only right that I do the full build for Model Engineer but thought I would share a few quick photos of the engine that I finished putting together this morning.

This if the first engine that I have designed from the ground up, others have just been enlarged and enhanced versions of someone else's design. It certainly offers new challenges and is more satisfying to do this way and I can see me doing more of the same.

Apart from a bought in flywheel casting its all fabricated. I also used e-bay gears as at £6.35GBP the pair it just was not worth buying gcutters and materals, governor balls also off e-bay.

I still need to play with the governor a bit as it jumps about at low reves but it is fully working and will keep the speed down to what I have set it at, going to run it in some more and adjust the bearings, big end, gland packing etc as they all bed in.

Thanks Ady, I did not count up the hours but as said started cutting metal end of July and finished this morning. Thats a couple of evenings a week and what time I can fit in at the weekends.

And your research?

There are Tidman articles/photos in 2952 3449 and 3437 btw

Mostly a very good set of photos with a tape measure in several taken by David Owen, at least one photo from the articles you list, couple of pics from a member of MEM and a few I have found on the web inparticular the one at Hollycombe.

Yes hope to have it at Brooklands. Will have a full set of drawings in the mag if you fancy a go

A very fine model Jason, thanks for showing the nice photos. What was the trickiest bit for you during the build?

Trickiest was probably the "A" frame, keeping it all true and square while bending the metal and welding it up.

A few Facts

Height excluding wooden base 19" , width 8" and 9.5" along the crankshaft

1.625" bore x 3" stroke

115 individual part snot including nuts, washers, studs or lagging planks

Those 115 parts are actually made up from 179 bits of metal, the base "casting" has the highest number of individual parts at 22.

What's next?

Thanks David and Diane though they were just quick snaps in the workshop and some better ones will be taken.

As for whats next, probably a quickie which I was thinking of posting the build here as again the details came to me due to an old post about the particular engine. Should be within the abilities of a beginner who has done one or two small engines before. Then there is a De Bolt casting set for an Allman vertical hit & miss that is calling me. The next scratch build is probably going to be this in 1/5th or 1/6th scale depending one which way I go with the flywheel.

Very nice cladding with grain to scale - what wood did you us?

Thanks Rod. I'm not quite decided what the wood is, could be mahogany, sapele or utile. Whatever it is it is old growth as I stripped it out of a clients house that was built around 1910, I got two bits 20" x 2" x 4ft long that were the tops of some shelf units either side of a rather nice arts & crafts fireplace. I've used it for a few of my model bases and it come sup quite well wit either Bona Mega acrylic or for a darker look as in this case I used Ozmo Poly-X.
