![]() 2314 forum posts 139 photos | Chris Yes I used one of Polly's hones and it worked well. You need to keep it lubricated, keep it moving and keep from spraying oil all round the workshop! My solution was to do it on the drill press where the constant in / out action is easier. The oil was contained by " modifying" a tub of peaches ( I added the peaches to my breakfast cereal ..yum yum) It took a while but worked well. Regards Norman |

20 forum posts | you can get brake cyl hones with 3 stones that are adjustable from 19mm to about 50mm they cost about £8 inc post from most suppliers, i use the larger ones on bike cylinders , so i can see no problemsusing them for your model engines, will. |

![]() 2376 forum posts 800 photos | I've got the Sealy kit which is widely available. I used it on my Wyvern cylinder and only this weekend: Works very well lubricated with my usual cutting fluid. As for mess, they are not nearly as bad as lapping. The stones don't lose much material, most of the mess is from the item being honed. They are not as good as laps at producing a truly parallel bore but I found it good enough to get to 1/2 thou over a 4" length - certainly good enough for a piston with a ring. The hone got rid of a bit of a taper on the casting above in about 5 minutes. Rod |

![]() 7468 forum posts 230 photos | I start with a cylinder hone, then move on to a wooden lap as I want a fine finish for my hot air engines. For an engine with CI rings, a hone leaves a good pattern on the bore to aid bedding in, and retaining an oil film. Ian S C |

3631 forum posts 160 photos | I came across some shotgun honing stones once which I suspect might go smaller but I couldn't find a holder. I did wonder if the holders were adjustable too. They might be in order to obtain precise sizes. John - |

Hello You'll soon dicover that honing is boring, so why not try boring instead of? J Maurel Probably because honing can produce both rounder and more parallel holes. With the some types of hones holes can be finished to a few microns, finish and everything else. John - |

![]() 7468 forum posts 230 photos | With first honing, then lapping you can get a mirror finish, ideal for a cylinder using soft packing, or O rings, if you use CI rings, just hone it, the rings will bed in with the slight roughness, which will also hold a film of oil. Honing is boring, but nothing on lapping. Ian S C Edited By Ian S C on 29/08/2015 12:48:43 |
