Definitely one for the administrator. Whenever I hit the return key while writing any posting or replies if I hit the return button while using my Apple Mac Book or apple desk top the cursor returns to the top of the document.

it is very frustrating.

It is fine on my steam powered windows laptop or my I Phone.

any Ideas as to why this happens?

The problem is caused by an update to iOS that has broken certain web interfaces.

There will eventually be a fix, but it has to be rolled into a massive update of the web software so its still some way down the line.

<rant mode> It's all because Apple want to be 'different' so they don't use the same standards as the rest of the world.</rant>

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enter_key is the root of the problem, but it's more complex than that....

Neil - as a one time member of the W3C HTML5 committee, my thoughts was that fellow members were estatic that Microsoft could now be persuaded to follow open standards, after years of thumbing their nose at the rest of the world.

Of course, we all know that as soon as open standards are adopted, each company adds or changes things to "improve the user experience" - a marketing way of saying "trying to lock in users to our platform".

Oh well! Glad I'm not doing that committee stuff any more, and only have to worry about my return key affecting postings here. (smile) John.

Neil,

Please forgive the pedantry, but iOS is for Apple's mobile devices ... the computer operating system is OS X

Zip files are another problem between Macs and PCs. i received a few zip files from a friend with a Mac recently and had difficulty unzipping them at first. It's do-able but I had to get a little "manual" with them .... I couldn't simply do an "unzip to ..." operation. Nor am I the only one to find this according to a Google search. The incompatibilities on things like this is mind-boggling).

And since the rant mode is working today, one of my pet peeves on this and other editors and, indeed, word-processing programs is that the apparent standard these days that "enter" ("return" for us older folks) leads to a double-spaced line. If you want single-spaced you have to use shift-enter (or leave it to word-wrap which often isn't appropriate).

Is that really supposed to be more convenient than just hitting enter for single spaced and whacking it twice (or more) for double (or more) spacing?

[ I'm quite prepared for someone to tell me - I would actually love to do so in fact - that this is caused by something in my specific setup. But it works this way in many (probably all) applications with or without use of the browser. ]

Whereas if you hit shift-enter instead, you get:

It happens on my iPad which runs IOS 8.3, so Neil is also correct.

Unless you have installed your iPad is on concrete foundations, I would say its comes under the 'mobile devices' category!smiley

The title of the thread says it all, but the OP also mentions using his iPhone (without this problem).

As to an iPad being a mobile device of course it is, so is an iPhone.

One might also suggest that the OP's Mac Book fits into a similar category, being very portable etc.

Concrete has nothing to do with any of this.

For avoidance of doubt, it's an Apple issue and it is dependant on which version of the OS you have and I understand it can affect any Apple device.

Neil ... Just for info. ... then I will secret

I have three different Macs, all on OS X 10.6.8 [Snow Leopard]

plus; one early iPad on iOS 5.1.1 and one iPodTouch on iOS 6

None of them exhibits this particular problem [and none of them can be "updated" to an OS version that does suffer this problem] ... ergo: it is, as you originally suggested, a feature of the more recent operating systems.

Well it certainly happens with OS X Yosemite. !!**!!

As a recent convert * to the "fruit fanciers brigade" - after constant nagging by all my offspring - it was a bit of a blow to start with. However the 27in. monitor is wonderful so I can put up with a bit of grief until, hopefully, it is sorted. It has the (unintended) advantage though of ensuring that I read my posts before submitting them!

* I am keeping my options open a bit though as I bought my wife a new Windows 8 machine to replace the old Windows 7 one that I'd had for years. I (hope) that this gives me the best of both worlds. One thing that the Apple stable will not achieve, I believe, is the production of executable files - a requirement in the production of AV sequences which is another way that I  while away the golden days of retirement!
