Humbrol Paint

Are the range of Humbrol enamel paints suitable for painting a model steam engine that later in it's life may have 'live steam' fed to it.

Basically is it capable of being used at the temperatures the cylinder will achieve and of course able to resist oil.

Also would 'real' engines have been finished in a gloss or a more satin paint.?

Should be OK with Humbrol thats whatI used on my couple of Stuarts. Brunswick green is about right.

Too glossy a finish can look a bit toy like but if you spray teh Humbrol the thinners helps to knock off a bit of teh sheen. Phoenix are also worth looking at.

So is it all done and ready for paint then?

Isn't there a law against using anything other than Humbrol 3 Brunswick Green and 21 Gloss Black for Stuart engines?

hi I use RUSTINS paint search for ruskins Buckingham green paint on eBay I have found it very good and the finish is a nice gloss

Actually I've seen a few Stuarts in blue that look quite nice. Cream would also look good on the table engine. Or our German friends like a touch of satin black which is OK but they do tend to buff up the brass a bit too much for my liking.

I painted my first traction engine with Humrol. Worked a treat and never had a problem, apart from runs and streaks from using a brush!

I am not sure if it is still made in the uk at Hull or not! 😚 maybe Hornby have moved it to China like all their other stuff.

I use Humbrol enamel on my engines, the gloss black is good on the cylinders, I've seen oil boiling on mine,but reds tend to discolour after a while and give that well used look.

Can I hijack this thread a minute and ask what you can add to Gloss paint to give it a Satin finish instead?

I personally don't consider that a hijack in any form. - It's related to a general painting question so I would say well and truly 'on topic'

No idea what to add to the paint though.

I think Phoenix that I linked to above do a matting agent. Accelerating the drying can also help thats what I do when using artists oils on my model figure, stand them directly under a 100w light bulb.

Hi Vic,

I've never tried but maybe adding satin clear to a gloss may take the edge off the sheen. Other than that you could always spray a top coat of satin over your gloss colour.

I have polished matt paint in the past to make a kind of scale lacquer finish on 1/35th armour barrels.

I find the solvent base enamels level out better so would go for them in preference to the acrylic if you are brushing it on.

I always use the Precision pain on my models, without any primer. Humbrol would be fine though but go for the gloss enamel although if you are going to run on steam I don't know how that one does.

Some of my friends use car spray but that is probably more expensive than precision paints.

if you want the same colour as i used it's P125 B R Southern coach green (gloss)

Humbrol do make a range of Satin enamels as well as Gloss, but only one green in it. The range of Matt paints is huge.
