Why did the donkeys in charge of Hermes think up the idea of changing the name to Evri, it has changed sweet FA?

About 3 weeks ago I manufactured some items for a shop down South. These items were posted first class sign for. After a week they had not arrived, I looked into the compensation claim procedure. The parts were worth approx £300 due to the time to make them. The material cost was about £30. The post office wanted proof of costs of items and proof of postage so I could claim £30. How can you find proof of cost and they needed photographic evidence. Total waste of time. The items arrived after 10 days. Never had problems with EVRI.

Hi Peter

Sorry to hear of your problem claiming but it is always best when sending anything of such value to ensure the service used provides adequate compensation in the event of loss or damage, Royal Mail SD is suitable for most small packages with up to £500 cover.

Got to agree with Emgee on postal/courier insurance, the basic i.e. cheapest cover doesn't really give you much protection.

In my experience, the service from Hermes/Evri completely depends on the person doing the delivery. My wife does quite a lot of online shopping with companies that use Evri and as long at is our usual delivery person they are reliable. The problems arise when they send someone else - then they usually fail to come on time if at all. We live on a main road and all the houses have names rather than numbers. I suspect that because of the number of parcels they are expected to deliver in a day, so they leave the difficult to find addresses until last.

How does that work then with all houses on a main road having names? I did think that everywhere had a number attached. The postcode narrows it down to about 10 houses on my road but i would hate to be a new driver finding a house without a number ..

I am a name not a number! Every now and then I find a parcel for my neighbour on my outside bin locker door beyond my backdoor because their place is half hidden by an industrial building, I think there are only 3 places in the village that have numbers.
One day last year I happened to chat to a friend who was sitting at one of the pubs outside tables and then said I was off to work at the cricket ground. When I got there a delivery van was waiting - they had sensibly asked at the pub what to do with a package addressed to the pavilion and was given a description of the bloke who was heading there,

Sorry to hear this.

I was in the same situation a while back, I simply wrote out an invoice for my time. They paid it.

I’ve had one sensible driver ring me up for a what3words address when he had trouble finding us. Perhaps out here in rural nowhere I should include it on the delivery address as routine.

I always think that postal insurance is like paying twice for the same thing. You contract with someone to move a package from A to B. Then you pay them again in case it doesn't actually get there.

Bit like paying a repair shop to fix your brakes then paying them a second amount in case you have no brakes and hit a wall when you leave.

Had a similar experience when they were Hermes.

They steal the item in the sorting area then send the empty .package on its way.

All looks normal to the system , until it gets to you.

Hence my suggestion, previously, of using what3words

DPD have our "What3Words" (Along with Map Position and Detailed Directions) for our rural address, but they still repeatly fail to get to us!

(We just have a House Name (No Number or Street Name)

There is always another way of solving things - do something yourself.
Presume others in your road have similar problems.
Instead of trying to improve the way the rest of the world operates - make it easier for them.
Why not get together, decide what the numbers should be, and put up signs accordingly.
Then anyone will be able to find you.

... but presumably the packages are addressed to the names not numbers so how would that help?

The article doesn't say which carrier, but it is nice to know we aren't the only ones.

Great little story, Brian yes … it seems to encapsulate the fundamental truths !

Once drone deliveries get underway, all these problems will be solved, instead of an address, the use of GPS coordinates will allow for deliveries to reach you with pinpoint accuracy, thus you find your packages perched upon your roof.

Any members who have lost parcels when using Herms/Evri, especially in the Norfolk area, may like to see a reason for parcels going missing.
Link below goes to an EDP article about a recent court case against an ex Hermes/Evri driver.
