Surely if one clicks accidentally on the ignore button there is a confirmation request before that poster is ignored?

.

Indeed there is:

.

But it was the only explanation I could suggest.

I think you can administrate blocked members via the 'Settings' menu

... but I'm on the 'bus at the moment, and one demo is enough.

Doug

you will need to replace the supplied thermocouple with a type K thermocouple that are available on ebay which would reach the required heat range

Can anyone tell me why I cannot see the posts by Douglas Johnston, please? They are totally invisible, only known to exist from quotes and the 'lastest forum posts' list!

I blame the Russians, they seem to be hacking everybody at the moment. Hold on let me just check that I really do exist........... yes it seems that I do!

I did wonder about that Rod and I looked up a data sheet on these PID's. That indicated they were available with different input temperature ranges and each range had its own part number. I can't understand why they would do that if they were suitable for different ranges. Can anybody who has one marked for 400 degree C tell us if they are happy to work perfectly well above this value?

Doug

I bought a MYPIN TA4 SSR a few years ago and hooked it up to my homebrew muffle furnace. Worked fine with a Type K thermocouple - I didn't take mine up to more than 900C to protect the nichrome windings. It looks like that model has been superceded by the TA4 SNR **LINK**

You are probably correct Micky, I just wanted to check with someone who had tried it in practice.

Wow - thanks for all the advice chaps - much appreciated.

The reason for powering the element from 110v is simply that I have a large reel of an unknown resistive element wire. Diameter 1.48mm. This is quite heavy duty and has too low a resistance for a small domestic furnace. It's not magnetic and hence I think it's a nichrome material. I want about 2 kw heating power and so supplying it with 110v meant I did not have to use a silly excessive length of wire. I have a 110v transformer, PID controller and both burst fire and phase angle controllers - so I have the kit - it's just finding the most sensible way to arrange it all. The most simple way was for me to use the controllers on the input to the 110v transformer since I already know they will function with 240v ac. My concern was feeding the modified waveform into the transformer and finding it caused heating losses within the transformer. Ultimately, if all else fails I'll reluctantly buy a finer gauge element.

I think my concern was addressed by a couple of the posters mentioning a) locating the phase / burst controllers on the output rather than the input of the transformer (I will need to check minimum working voltages) and the assymetry issue causing dc currents in the transformer.

I had considered the "cheap" E-Bay furnaces (1kg / 2kg capacity) but I read several comments suggesting the elements fail easily and you have to replace both element and central ceramic tube. I want to be running this at 1300C - at it's limit - hence my thinking of using my heavy duty wire to give it more robustness (shock resistance and longer oxidation resistance).

Not totally sure, but at 1300 I think you are running in crusilite element territory.

Interested to know what you will be using this kiln for, 1300°C is a lot of heat.

I was too slow realising my mistake..... 1100C and not 1300C - but thanks for pointing it out

I see no way of unblocking, if that were the case. I've never blocked anyone, to my knowledge. And usually if a post were to be blocked, the missing posts would be indicated (for continuity), even if the post were missing? Forum has some peculiar quirks, it seems.

Go to My Posts and you will see your posting My Postings and My ignored members you can then deselect an ignored member

You can manage ignored members by clicking "My Posts" on the top green bar

NDIY you are not ignoring any members so not sure why you can't see the posts.
