Sten gun!

Something from the Lion comic I had in the 1960's (Trellawney of the Guards stormed his way across Western Europe defeating the German army single-handed with one), I don't think they really existed (made from broom handles, left over 303 barrels, pipe cleaners etc). Anyway I'm going to make one on my Warco and when I've finished that I'll finish the robot Archie I started a few years back...or maybe that light pull thinking

Be careful Chris!

You are not dealing with sensible, logical people, with a sense of humour. One wrong word and you will be banged up for a longer time than any proven murderer.

At the induction to work in Security, the initiation, often seems to be to amputate the part of the brain dealing with common sense!

Once, a colleague and I, each had to get a signed pass out, to leave the premises and go across the road on company business!

(And this was not an establishment involved in defence or national security, purely manufacturing and product development)

Perhaps I'm the one who is paranoid?

I'm sure 'they' would look at someone's internet browsing history.

More likely, they will monitor people's internet browsing histories and those looking at websites about gun conversion will be those most likely to get a workshop visit.

Its a real shame! I have given up making black powder incase someone confuses me with a radicalised isis member and i get sent to prison. November 5th just isnt as much fun with bought in fireworks. And was I ever likely to blow anyone (other than myself) up, no, 'course not. People with brains dont make bombs in their garage...oh sorry, they do? Still takes all the fun out of it. Hey but I did get a license to make biodiesel a few years back. What most people wont realise is that if you get the esterification process a wee bit wrong you make an extremely toxic nerve agent (not naming it here because there sadly will be some goon who googles it and tries it) which is readily absorbed through the skin on contact, but hey ho, thats OK! The world has indeed gone crazy!

That's if you don't use a proxy server for your searches or use Google instead of DuckDuckgo, which does not record the pages you visit.

You don't even have to search for the information, it comes on a plate from the Yahoo groups I am on that have American members, protected by the Second Amendment, who make their own guns, reload bullets, ream chambers, bore barrels etc Are they going to censor the Internet groups that we belong to ?

No, but it would be naive to think that they are more likely to monitor individuals who frequent american gun forums than flower-arranging discussion groups.

Not to say that 'they' don't cross reference such information with plenty of other information.

Nothing new - I attended a meeting of the Anti-Nazi League in my first year of university, and after that all my mail was opened before I got it (before being carefully replaced and resealed with 'opened in error' or damaged in post' marked on it) for a year. One chap said I was imagining it - so as I was heading to the pigeon holes I said come with me - and lo! There was a ripped parcel carefully resealed into an outer envelope,

Shame, if I had gone to the 'correct' meeting i could have been signed up by MI5

One day I'll see if I can get my file off them

Maybe some of you should ignore the wind - up merchants. Think about it -

1) Thousands of lathes, mills and many other "gun-making" tools + men in sheds. How practical for extremely short staffed `ol` bill` to check?

2) Intent has to be proved beyond all reasonable doubt for a conviction.

IF a witch - hunt law did eventually come about, how many mugs would declare what they own with all the red tape paperwork that would likely be involved?

Everyone mug enough to register their lathe, mill, etc would get all the aggro and the real dodgy characters with "intent" would keep their heads below the parapet and escape easy detection or as they say, "go underground."

The UK is not alone.

In Australia there is a proposal before the government to increase the penalties for possession of a prohibited firearm from a few years to in some cases 17 years jail. Ok this applies to the malefactors.

More worrying is part of the proposal ropes in any person that possess a tool or machine that is used or intended to be used in the manufacture a prohibited firearm or part of a prohibited firearm. Similar terms of imprisonment will apply? (Registered Gunsmiths and Manufacturers excluded).

The increased penalties are only part of a proposal at the moment, (There are already stringent laws in pace). Maybe there is time to point out to the politicians that the tens of thousands of workshops around the country are operated by artisans not criminals.

Regards
John

All a load of hot air and the more posts like this the worse the paranoia gets.

Long short is that plod hasn't enough time to do what they are supposed to do. There are already laws in place so that you have to show a log book before you can get a set of number plates made up.

Having said that Ebay will sell you anything you want and the serious car thief / ringer will have their own set of stamping machine. All it does is affect the few slow witted people who want a plate for their caravan or trailer. I say slow witted as most have bought off off Ebay or any Sunday car boot.

Anyway there is a loophole in any projected law that means it's doesn't apply to you.

Just explain it's not fit for purpose and you have at least 125,857 people on this forum to back you up.

It's only worrying if you are making illegal firearms. You can be prosecuted for possession of an offensive weapon if you have a screwdriver, but I don't suppose for a moment that you've ever worried about that.

The worry isn't making firearms, or nuclear warheads etc

The worry is a compulsory register of lathe users and jack-booted clipboard wielding council muppets marching into your home every few months to check the Prevention of Terrorism lathe users register and to use it as an excuse to inspect every room in your home

All in the interests of our safety of course, perfectly reasonable unless you have something to hide...

This means I may have to hoover up and tidy my home every few months !!!

That's just nonsense

It would be... if we lived in a society that doesn't erode the personal freedom to choose on a regular basis

They already stare into your rubbish bin checking for non government approved refuse and ban people from doing this and that and the other

Every few weeks there seems to be new "banning" legislation going through parliament, if there's one thing Parliament excels at in recent years, it's "banning" stuff.

Hot Air? I stuck to the facts.

Having spoken to JS earlier I am confident he was referring to the whole issue - we both recall a similar fuss in the pages of ME back when the original legislation they propose to amend came out.

I suspect the new law will benefit model engineers. Presently owning specialist tools could get you in hot water (has anyone got a gun drill in the workshop?) The proposed change would me no tools are outlawed, instead possession of any tools (even a screwdriver) WITH intent would.

Please read my earlier post quoting the consultation - the bit where it points out that possession of paper and pen is illegal - but only if you intend to commit fraud using them. The same principle would apply to our tools and conversion of replica guns.

Paranoia is a great thing.

The government passes a law requiring the registration of machine tools and authorises local model engineering clubs to enforce this. The next stage is that the owner has to be a member of the now authorising club. The club then has to affiliated to The Party. Finally the machine tool owner has to be a Party member.

Remember the Soviet Union banned the private ownership of things like lathes along with printer and photocopiers.

Why does the spell checker not work?

Don't forget it is already legal for a tradesperson or professional whom you invite into your home to do a job of work to examine your computer files and photograph you and your home and use such information to make money (not through blackmail but by selling to newspapers) and to provide such information to the police to determine if a crime may have been committed. By extension they can rifle through all you personal papers, bank statements etc in any room in the house and use such information, with help of the media, to destroy your career, life, marriage, without any comeback.
