I think they're old-style adjustable shelf supports. Small end goes in holes in the vertical sides, shelf sits on top of the 'disc' bit. My neighbour gave me an old shelf unit some years ago and the shelves were held up by identical 'brass' castings.

I've just spoken to Mrs Hall about this. Apparently her mother has two more, which are also 5 minutes slow. She thinks she may have bought them at the same time, so possibly a faulty batch? It doesn't bother us. Ours lives in the spare room.

We have one of those radio-controlled clocks. It copes fine with the change of hour, but has been consistently four minutes slow for years. No idea how that happens.

Drill a 1mm hole and file it back.

Whatever make it is, someone's removed the safety guards. Use with care; it's more than capable of removing your friend's fingers, or anyone else's for that matter.

You don't need an attachment to make the MT. Just swivel the headstock to the right angle.

Don't be distressed, Clive. I've had one done, Mrs H has had both done and my father had his done (age 92!). All good, and if you go for it, you won't regret it. My only problem is the cataract developing in my left eye is not bad enough yet to get it done on the NHS. Seriously thinking of going private.

They look like good results to me.

No-one has mentioned tool flex. When I bore on my Speed 10, (or anything else) it always cuts on the way out if I don't back the tool off. Boring aluminium last week (34mm dia x 60mm deep) I put the tool through 4 times at the final diameter, backing off each time. It still removed material on the fourth pass. Maybe you should figure this into the equation as well.

Then avoid used machinery. If you have no experience, a warranty will give you peace of mind.

If there is a club close to you, it might be worth your while waiting until lockdown ends and paying them a visit. You could learn a lot from talking directly to lathe users. There is a limit to what you can learn by asking questions on the internet.

Throw a bedsheet over it. Keeps the dust off and reduces the risk of condensation. You can wash it when it gets grubby too.

Ah yes, you could be right. My father taught me how to do this when I was six, so my recall is a bit sketchy. I've never touched the stuff since! Dad also managed to electrocute me when I was 13. Frankly, he was rubbish at DIY. I inherited his rawlplug/philplug hammer drill thing when he died, along with his rusty salvaged woodscrew collection and threw it all away.

They used to come with a packet of asbestos filler. Put a pinch of the fibres on your palm, spit on it, roll into a plug to fit the hole and pop it in. Job's a goodun. [cough, cough]

I have some Vallorbe needle files, which I use often. I don't know what a set of eight of them would cost today. I bought them 39 years ago.
