Thread: London Model Engineering exhibition at Alexandra Palace
27/09/2023 17:49:07

Greetings Noel, you might have mentioned the excellent show put on by Halesworth and District M E Society, LOMEX, in Lowestoft, October 28 & 29th.

This an excellent show, loads of models of all types and well worth a visit.

More details on the society's website.

A lot nearer for many people than Reading.

Thread: Rob Roy lack of steam
26/09/2023 08:15:06

Greetings Steve and congratulations on completing your Rob Roy build.

You must remember that this is a more than 50 yr old design and the loco was designed for Welsh steam coal whilst most people use anthracite beans, which need a little more draft. I suggest that apart from the excellent check points mentioned above by Simon, you consider making a blast nozzle about 15 thou smaller than the one shown on the plans.

Plenty of these locos are about running well, although Martin himself suggested that a single radiant superheater, and more tubes might give better results. I have built 2 of these, years back, and had the same trouble as yourself with the first one. Smaller blast pipe helped.

Finally, I think you should try it on the track, get a good fire, plenty of water in the gauge, and with full pressure get the loco moving well, notch up and try to keep going.

Greetings Jason, I think you would be pleased with a Quorn, it will do all I asked it to do. Remember it was designed for Model Engineers.

Thread: 12" Southworth pump question
10/09/2023 07:48:36

Greetings Ian, although I have no experience with the Southwold range, I have built a number of this type of pump, as well as operating the "full size" versions.

I would say that they all can behave as you describe, but the biggest single item that does need care with single cylinder pumps is lubrication. If your lubrication system is OK, then look elsewhere, but i have found that lubrication on the steam side to be very important for reliable running.

Thread: Jubilee boiler 3.5 gauge
01/09/2023 07:57:43

Greetings Derek, if you examine the old Model Engineer mags with the original articles, you will find that Martin Evans designed a parallel boiler version of this design, which would of course be correct for the earlier Fowler version of the locomotive. The Fowler parallel boiler design is to be found on page 561 of the 7th May 1959 edition of ME. Martin also produced a 5 inch gauge tapered boiler design a little later.

May I suggest that if you do go ahead with building the boiler, you use a single superheater boiler tube rather than 3 as originally designed, and use a full length of the firebox stainless radient superheater . This modification was also was drawn by Martin a little while later, but I would not bother with the thermic syphon shown on the same drawing. This advice was given to me by Martin himself when I discussed my build with him.

These designs make a fine locomotive, many examples are to be seen performing well, but I cannot remember a Fowler version, so you could have a first.

Good luck with the sale Tug, and I think you have made a good choice for you.

I have gone the other way & have, at 80, decided to start another 71/4 loco, having finally finished the A4.

All the best for the future.

Thread: Regrinding Milling cutters - worth it or not?
27/06/2023 07:39:33

Greetings, having now, finally, after years in the hobby, got into regrinding cutters, I can tell you that reground, sharp cutters make a noticeable difference in my work produced. Cuts are easier, and leave a better finish than using a cutter from the "cutter box".

I built a Stent, which worked well, but now have a Quorn, built by a deceased friend, which I prefer. Using a diamond wheel they could not be sharper.

Sorry to hear that Ramon, I hope this does not start a trend, I reached that number last year and a week later took delivery of the boiler for my latest loco.

You know what will happen, a week after you close the workshop, a job will turn up, "if only I still had a lathe/Mill/whatever.

All the best.

You are quite right about fingers being damaged in loco motion when trying to turn by hand, it took me ages to clean the blood off mine.
