Yes, it will, 'Grab' at the slightest chance. Use a tapping compound or WD 40 and try not to make a full turn of the tap, turn until a resistance is felt and back off. Then turn again until it cuts again. Being ductile the chip is difficult to break off and most breakages occur on the back turn clearing of the chip.

I'd go with Bert, and use a Threadflo, or similar fluteless tap, Drill for a 65% thread depth. These taps are made for high speed power tapping, but they work ok at hand tapping speed, use oil, or normal cutting lub. Ian S C

I use Rocol RTD (stands for Reaming, Tapping, Drilling) compound for small sizes of tap. No problems found in copper with that.
