You will see from the dodgy photos that I made a sliding table with linear bearings and rods.

The scale is mounted to the table which is attached to the quill.

the reader head is attached to the head itself, it’s worked ok for a couple of years now.

Here are some photos of the Z axis scale on my Warco mill if anyone is interested

I would be interested to see how Warco do the Z axis, mine is on the quill not on the column. I can’t see what use it would be on the column. If anyone is interested, I could take the cover off mine and post some photos.

I have fitted three axis glass scale dros to my Warco WM18,

Thw Z axis is a bit trickier than the other two and I’m not sure that Warco offer that option on this mill

I didn’t like the quill dro that was factory fitted, I’m sure many people get on alright with it so maybe it’s me.

If you believe that the terms ‘indian’ and ‘precision ‘ are mutually exclusive, it may be interesting to look up Jantar Mantar, Jaipur. I went there a few years ago, and was very impressed.

There is a great deal of treatments available for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. If you think you are suffering from either of them, ask your doctor to refer you to you local hospitals rheumatology clinic.

My father-in-law, aged 87 has had various treatments over the past few years and his rheumatoid arthritis has eased considerably. Many medications intended for cancer treatments have been found beneficial to arthritis patients.

He takes Methotrexate in tablet form and injects himself weekly with Benepali. His knuckles were enormous and now they appear normal and give him no pain.

I have osteoarthritis, one of the treatments is a malaria drug, the name of which I cannot remember which I cannot take because it can make the Vittelliform Macular Dystrophy in both eyes worse.

I knew a chap in the 1960s who had worked in a company that made brass water taps and sanitary fittings. This was after his demob at the end of WW2.

He told me that all the threads were made using gravers and chasers, and in his shed he had a Lathe with no feedscrew or gearing upon which he demonstrated this skill. As a youth of sixteen I was suitably impressed.

Often these batteries suffer from dry electrolytes. They are not really sealed in that if overcharged even slightly the gases escape through the relief valve. It’s usually possible to prise the top off and removing the rubber caps, which are the relief valves, to squirt a little distilled water to revive the cells. Sealed lead acid batteries need a charger that regulates the voltage applied to each cell which from my fading memory is something like 2.35 volts per cell.

I do have a set or Dormers and similar quality drills up to 13mm, but I don’t use the good drills for jobs that don’t call for them.

This far, I’ve not been disappointed with anything from Arc.

Just a heads up, Arc are doing a set of drills 1-6mm for near enough £40 posted, split point for the larger than 3mm. I’ve bought a set. No connection other than a satisfied customer.

While his achievements with aeroplanes and their armaments are very well known, his greatest project IMHO was the design and construction of the Stratosphere Chamber which can still be seen at the Brooklands site, at the time the largest in the world.

it was so successful commercially that Vickers ran it 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Thanks for that, Neil. I thought that might be correct, but English names aren’t always pronounced how one would expect. Cholmondely, and Featherstonehaugh, for example.
