Hi Everyone

I am trying to find 3/16 x 40tpi brass studding for a project I'm currently working on. I have tried all the usual places but have had no success yet. I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me where I might get some, I would like 12" of it ideally.

Many Thanks

David

I have never seen ME thread studding.

What is the project that specifically requires this size. 2BA studding is available, very slightly smaller and approx 32 TPI. Would that not suffice.

Hi Barry

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately this is too small. The project is a carburetor for a Westbury Internal Combustion Engine so it needs to be this size. This is already tapped for this size.

Thanks

David

Surely it would not be too difficult to make? I presume that a whole 12 inch length is not needed?

Best wishes

Given the cost of brass studding in the BA sizes its likely to be cheaper to buy a length of 3/16 brass and a die thats if you could even find it in 3/16 x 40

Does it need to be threaded all the way? most studs just need threading each end.

Joe at maccmodels sells studding - but as above, its a load cheaper to buy bar and a die

Buy a 40TPI Coventry die set from Ebay or Tracy Tools and screwcut it.

why would you spent a relatively large sum on a coventry die head to thread some 3/16" brass bar?

(unless youve just won the lottery!)

a tailstock dieholder with a hole drilled through it for the material will do perfectly ok for 3/16" x 40 tpi. i have a lever tailstock on my lathe which assists things a bit, but it would be a few minutes work to thread same as described on most lathes. never had any 'run out' on the thread. ive quite often cut ME threads this way in the lathe in brass and bronze

cheers,

julian

Julian, DC1 suggested a die set not the whole head, you use one of the cutters as your form tool and screwcut with that. I think Tracy even do a special holder for them.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I had tried threading the bar myself, but for some reason the threads proved too loose. I managed to track down a supplier that carry this size, BA Bolts.
