Advertising banners

Why does the advertising banner obscure the text posts these days? If I were an advertiser I would be very reluctant to spend money on something so irritating!

Seems like just about all of 'em today, can't even get the text line on the page and ads down the middle. Don't tell me to change my settings etc, etc., fed up with the whole thing. No other sites have this problem.

All threads seem OK to me .... Win 7 IE 9 64 Bit (Compatability Mode Off)

I would like to make a comment on this subject and I am not trying to be offensive in any way, but, I am surprised (flabbergasted really) that you ask which 'threads are at fault'!

This problem has been aired may times, if there is 'fault' it is with the website.

It is good of you to keep spending time (editing 'errant' posts) but it is minute fraction of the time and effort the forum members have wasted experimenting, changing settings, changing browsers, posting suggestions to solve the problem etc.

I cannot understand why or how your employers are happy with such a sub-standard product (the forum area), of their various publications. Yes, I have seen complaints and comments on the 'Model Boats' and 'Model Flying' forums. I wonder whether their editors take the same flack as you do.

I could go on, but I am calming down now.

Forgot to say, I have not had any posts obscurred on my 'digitally based viewing system' for several weeks now so currently I don't actually have a problem.

I think David should ask which posting is at fault, as the issues seems to be OS/Browser/Thread dependent ... he could waste a lot of time opening every thread trying to fing the one at fault. (The thread could be a very old one for all he knows)

I can open and read all the threads that have been added to in the past 24 hours with no problem seen.

So it would help David if when a user posts a "Text under Ad's issue" that they indicate in their posting which thread they are refering to.

Here we go again! (Dave 'Steambuff) ideas and suggestions about cicumventing the problem rather than fixing it).

Maybe every time we post to this forum we should state which operating system, the make of PC, current version any USB drivers, colour of screen background etc we are using. For all we know some or all of those might be factors (compounded by the calendar date) in whether the adverts obscure the posts. Another thought, maybe MHS should issue guidance on what computer and software we should purchase to have unimpaired post vewings.

I see little point in the forum users wasting any more time in discussing the problem (althou that is exactly what I am doing now!) MHS are just not interested.

I was just stating that to assist in resolving the issue that users say which thread is causing the problem when they report a problem.

It is clear that the issue is Browser/OS/Config/Setting dependent, otherwise everyone would suffer. Perhaps the solution is the banning of posting of active links or images as these seem to cause the issue.

I must agree that MHS are not interested in the users .... I still have a outstanding subscription issue/question going back to August which they don't seem willing to answer. (Yes David they still have not responded)

Hi David , you could try these two on the I/C thread to begin with

'DC Rapier' by Rich Lowe and the 'Pair of Tigres' both of which are spoilt once again by this sorry state of affairs on this forum.

You, and quite a few others on here know how I personally felt about this forum - I saw it as such an asset and extension to our hobby but this situation is irrating to the extreme. I have as you know asked several times in the past if this problem can be resolved once and for all - obviously for what ever reason it can't or won't be and I have long given up on making further comment on the subject.

However as others have often alluded to other forums do not seem to suffer with this problem and whilst I do pop in from time to time I don't do so as often nor post as much unless I can help somewhere - I have, for the most part I'm afraid, voted with my feet

I believe the problem is usually caused by a long link being inserted in a post - surely it's not beyond the remit of those involved to sort that out.

This is not a dig at you David, you have more than enough on your plate but if it's only you that watches and continually down to you to sort out then I guess you are automatically in the firing line. No one - on here - should expect you to read and keep on top of every topic on a daily basis but the suggestion that those that can do something about it be approched should be taken up.

I'm definately not computer savvy but someone in the past suggested using FireFox and to use their 'advert eliminator'. I tried this and it worked successfully removing any advert required on either side leaving nothing but the text but I didn't get on with Fire Fox and reverted back. Perhaps however this should be pointed out to those that matter - not much point in having advertising if we all have the ability to switch it off.

Hope you will take this in good faith - I've all but given up that something can be done about this frustrating disfigurement of threads but which ever way it goes this will definately be my last input on the matter.

I have to agree with everything Ramon has said on this.

I know I'm banging my head against a brick wall but I have an investment in this matter in that I would be embarrassed to say exactly how much time I have wasted trying different browsers and then having to sort out the resulting disarray of setting, favourites etc. Like Ramon I spend less time here now and if I see the adverts misplaced I just exit and don't look at the forum for a few days.

It would be nice if this problem was solved, on the other hand the chances are that when MHS do do something, they will break something else! The last major 'improvement' to this site was the incorporation of an unbelievably poo spell checker which it did not need anyway.

I've tried all of the suggested tricks, nothing has worked, and now I miss out because as soon as I open a posting and the words disapear behind an advert I close the thread.

As an infrequent poster on here I would like to add my 2 Drachma. The problem of the advertising banner encroaching on the text is infrequent, BUT when it occurs it is frankly annoying. I generally don't bother eading any thread with the problem, like Martin P.

Advertising is the life blood of these sites, but why on earth can't the ads all be placed down the left hand side in a single column with the For Sale and Wanted ads? It cannot be rocket science to tidy this up and stop annoying people.

The text box used for typing messages appears to have finite limits to its width so why can't the webmeisters simply control the width of the published text?

I haunt other boards, because of some of my other interests, and not one of them has this irritating problem. It is the 21st century and computers, the interwebbynet, forums and message boards are not exactly new or still in the development stage.

I have to admit that since the problem with long links was sorted a while ago I don't seem to have a problem.

As well as long links the problem also seems to be caused by posters adding pictures next to each other caused by not hitting return after each picture. These could surely be corrected by the Tech guys who could limit the width of the centre column to a percentage of the whole page. As it is the width of the whole page is fixed and not dynamic. Not knowing the software (and I can't be bothered to browse the source code) I'm not sure if this can be changed. How about it techies?
