Thread: lathe stand ideas pls

I have a Warco 1332 and it sits on a decent stand with a nice sized back splash and a good tray underneath.
What I do think are design flaws are the electric box (fuses etc) is on the back making it very hard to access unless the lathe is moved away from the wall. The other problem is that the suds reservoir is located behind a side panel, again this makes it awkward to access.
Worth a thought if you are building your own.

they took the order then a week later e-mailed me and said they were out of stock and when the new stock come in I would be charged full price.

I told them to stuff it and refund my money.

I'll never use them again.

Just a quick question about band speed and feed rates.
I am chopping slices from a 3" diam round bar (steel).
It's taking about 8 to 10 minutes per cut.
The chips are more like iron filings that flakes/chips.
Do you think I should up the feed rate a little, I'm not so bothered as the saw seems comfortable and it's cutting nice and straight.
What does the panel think ? (Thanks for the help so far)

Hi Guys & Gals
I need to get a couple of spare blades for my bandsaw.
It takes a 2362 x 19 x 0.8.
There is no markings on the current one but the guy I bought it from said it was a HSS one that he got whilst in France.
What does the panel think I aught to buy and what TPI, at the moment I am using a 10 tpi on EN 1 A and it seems to work well enough.

Any more items of stove size in workshop will start to cramp my style.
I do, however, have a table top stove/grill for powder coating small items, but haven't sorted out a way for doing bigger ones, yet.
Geoff - No further with chuck handling contraption.

My wife never hears anything during the day as she spends all the daylight hours in the basement.

Note to self , must find out why she has a coffin full of earth down there.

I am having a go at building a 2" Burrell Roller and have a few parts

I intend to clean up some steel parts that are a bit tarnished in my bead blaster.

Some bits like the rolls will ultimately end up painted and some bits won't. I think they all need some kind of protection once cleaned up.

What does the panel think I should use, any recommendations ?

Also while on the subject what kind of paint do folks put on their boilers ?

I found a great video by Tubal Cain on youtube last night.
What he suggests is to push down the sides towards the chuck (increasing the diam of the hole) and when at the bottom, stop and move towards the centre cleaning the base. Obviously leaving a couple of thou to deepen the hole ready for this. I'm going to give that a try and see how I get on.
I have also secured a Warco 812g single phase bandsaw that I'm collecting tomorrow !!

So I have opened the hole out nicely but the bottom is a bit messy.
What do the panel think might be the best tool to clean it up. ?

Starting with a 3" Diameter round steel bar
I want to end up with several pieces about 1" thick with something like a 1/2" shallow (2" wide) in the end of each piece, like an ashtray (does that make sense ?)
So I figure, I set the bar in the chuck square and true and cut the 1/2" deep scallop out of the end face, then use a parting tool to take a 1" slice off the end, job done.
So what method would you employ to cut the scallop out, I can't seem to settle on something comfortable. If I drill a hole in the centre 1/2 deep I can then get a boring type cutter in there and open it up. The pain is I have to use two cutters to do the scallop and a third to part.
What do the panel thing is the easiest method/cutter type. ?

I would say 12 months is more the norm but will also depend on if you need copper or steel. Get it on order as soon as you settle on a subject then it will be ready around the time that you need it.

Also 2-4" scale can vary a lot depending on what the prototype size was, eg a 4" road loco could have the same size boiler as a 6" tractor. Or a 2" ploughing engien about double the size of a 2" tractor.

Ah the plot thickens.

The moral of the story is that I should order the boiler but get the casings now if I understand you correctly.

I think copper is the way I'll go.

I have been looking now for some time a building a traction engine and I'm almost ready to take the plunge.
I have seen some talk of boilers taking upwards of 18 months to materialize !!
Is this true ?
I have not yet settled on a make but have been looking at.
Burrell, Little Sampson, Minnie. (all the usual).
Size will be determined by price I guess but ideally between 2 and 4"
