Looks like it may be from the Irn Bru factory

I remembered the punch-line, and simply put Irn Bru Girders into Google.

Bed looks like a piece of RSJ. Made for a special purpose or an apprentice training piece maybe?

It appears to be a special made for turning nuclear fuel rods of pure unobtainium to size.

The chunky handles make it easier to operate wearing a noddy suit.

I was wondering if it may be a training lathe of some sort.

My God, it's ugly. If this was designed by an apprentice maybe he went on to design the Colchester Chipmaster — see here:

Yeah, I know it's functionally well regarded, and is held in affection by many who cut their teeth on it, but it's got to be a good candidate for king of the uglies. wink

Yours provocatively,

Joe

I remember the Chipmaster in the school workshop in 1962, it was brand new (the other lathes, mainly Harrisons dated back to the beginning of the 20th C), it was amazing, it sure could produce swafe.1/2" wide, and red hot! think it had a 5hp motor. Ian S C
