113 forum posts | Hi, since the publishers forced Colin Usher to remove his index of ME & MEW off the web because of copywrite, I need to find the indexes for MEW, as I dont have all the issues, so other than drag out all the mags, (which at the moment are stowed away) is there a solution ???????. Or could this site put the indexes in say, the archives, or extras. John Holloway |

We did not tell Colin Usher to remove the indexes to Model Engineer and Model Engineers' Workshop.
We just stopped sponsoring his website so I assume he removed them.
You can't, as far as I am aware, copyright a list.
Certainly you can't with a list of ingredients for a recipe and I assume a list of the contents of a magazine is the same.

![]() 1946 forum posts 179 photos | Hi David, I would have thought that the compiler of the list would have any copyright that is applicable by being the author. As well as Colin ushers (which is still on his website) there is also a good index here. Terry |

![]() 1946 forum posts 179 photos | Hi David, Anything that is authored and original can be copyrighted. These indices are more than simple lists they are searchable databases. If I create a new recipe with my list of ingredients it is copyright. Try making your argument with Hester Blumenthal. I suggest that you check with your legal dept. Regards Terry Precisely your new list is YOUR copyright. Now if someone reads MEW and makes a list up then it's THEIR copyright. So if Colin makes a list up as opposed to just copying one which is a breach of copyright the list is HIS copyright Other wise it will stop people reading books, getting information out of them and writing their own version. I must admit I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on television or forums. John S. Edited By John Stevenson on 16/06/2011 21:43:50 |

Like John, I'm not a lawyer either, but the society of indexers has consulted one over this very issue, and his consideration of this is publicly available to read as a PDF - here. Seems pretty unequivocal to me... |

418 forum posts 4 photos | I have an index at This displays the magazines content by subject, typically Welding, but does not list the full index with the issues in chronological order so is not ideal for John (Jomac) but may be of help. I will consider adding a chronological list when time is available. Harold |
