OK, last month the latest edition of MEW didn't appear on the Home page for ages.  Then I looked at the digital editions page and there it was.  This month, it's on the Home page but not on the digital issues page - at least not on my subscriber's page.  I always like to look at the digital version while waiting for my subscription, paper edition, to arrive - if only to see what bargains I've missed out on, in the "for sale" small ads!
With a bit of luck , after I've had a bit of a rant, the postlady arrives with it the next day.  Here's hoping!
Rant over.
John

They seem to be releasing it about the time it goes on sale to the great unwashed.
I got 168 on Tuesday.

I always used to receive my subscription copy 4 or 5 days before it was in the shops, now it seems to arrive the day before or on the day of sale.
I don't mind if the digital edition is released a few days after the publishing date but s a subscription copy should arrive earlier than that!
What's going on??

I appreciate that David has had health/injury issues recently and that the deputy editor is moving on but this has been an ongoing issue for some months now.

What is the published release date to the public ?

As an aside I have only had time for a quick perusal  [ stupid customers getting in the way again ] but this months looks very interesting in that it seems to have a good cross section of articles.

Have to agree with you guys, am getting a bit annoyed with paying a subscription for BOTH the MEW areas and to have the digital edition appear AFTER I have received the paper one in Australia, not quite the idea behind the purpose of a digital subscription.

I should think this has got to be a management decision given that the electronic copy is put to bed first because that's how the printers get it.
Only David can explain the reasoning behind this.

Back again, thought by now the digital edition would be available, but NO !!.
Even though the Home page says "Model Engineers' Workshop issue 168, now on sale" and has done for a few days, it is still not in either digital location !!

NB....or is there something wrong in the system with my subscription.

OH!! yes, while in grumpy mode, when "looking" at an issue online especially just after printing a page, why does a little box keep jumping up telling me that something is wrong with the online viewer and do I want to shut down the viewer, NO I dont want to !!, I just would like to view the edition in peace. Have actually tried shutting down the viewer and reloading the edition but makes no difference.

That's all I can think of right now.
You all have a good day !!

They are currently advertising for an assistant editor, part of whose role will be the web presence. So reading between the lines, maybe people are a bit stretched at the moment.

Things have been worse, the odd issue is missing from the volumes I inherited from my Dad from the forties, quite probably because the ships they were sent in now lie at the bottom of the Atlantic. Or maybe when the office was destroyed in the Blitz it caused the odd hiccough.

So stop complaining, get out to the workshop and make a bit of swarf.

regards
John

Hi There
Not overstretched as far as the magazine and web go.
The digital editions are done in the office.
Nothing to do with the Model Engineer team.
regards David

Hi There
Regarding the print issues, the magazine has never missed a deadline.
I think the printers are overstretched.

I used to have a set of ME's from 1940 to 2000 before I got rid of them.

I clearly remember that in the war years they showed a picture of the offices that had been bombed out but they still went to print.

However sometime around 1998 ?? they stopped putting the dates on the ME mag, only the serial numbers because they got that far out of step with distribution and missing the date off stopped complains that it was late. Whether it was a print issue or management I dare say will not be known as there were a lot of changes going on.

Print runs with printers are not new, it happens all over. One of the MEW's was released on a short run and many didn't get their copies, I believe it was about issue 60 / 70 and subscriptions were extended one issue.

This is where the digital editions come into their own to fill gaps in.

One thing to remember here is that these specialist magazines have an editor and possibly a sub editor who are involved with the subject and they have to do their best to [a] please like minded people and [b] please the shirts in management who basically don't have a clue past figures and circulation numbers.

To us it's a hobby, to them it's a cash cow.

A rather cynical posting there John.  Of course putting the magazine out is a business proposition and it has to make some money but to suggest that niche magazines like ME and MEW are cash cows is rather stretching things.

No Lawrie what I was saying is that we have people like David driving the magazine as they know roughly what is needed for the punter but at the top end of the scale we have shirts that have not been to a show  [ I remember David saying that the head shed had to be dragged to a show to see what it was all about ], know nothing about the hobby but regard the group of magazines purely as business.

Cynical or not it is a cash cow, if it wasn't it would have died ages ago.

It's not a mom and pop weekend operation because they are interested in it. It has a board of directors and shareholders. Remember in the last 15 years it has changed hands at least 3 times and it's not been for four pounds seventeen shillings and ninepence.

Magicalia bought Encanta for just under £3 million pounds and has a further £100m to spend on acquisitions according to the Telegraph. so I'm sure that the head shed isn't seen in a boiler suit with grease top on with Train Driver stiched on.

   Hi there everyone,
Looking over the remarks of members for the current month,
I too would like to add my two pennies worth. I was hoping to be able to read some articles in the September issue of the digital edition but , like other people, I cannot access it on my computer. Hope it is back on Monday.

Will do John, but would still like my digital edition BEFORE the paper one gets here.

Whoops!  Sorry.  I seem to have stirred up a bit of a hornet's nest with my original posting.  It was only meant as a tongue-in-cheek josh, but appears to have struck a chord with a few of you.  If it's upset anyone, then I apologise.
Happy swarfing.

Hi There
The digital editions will hopefully be up today.
Holidays are to blame.
They will try to keep up to date in the future.
Don't forget, they have to do other magazines as well and also the regular work.
regards David
